It's a brutal look into DC's first rated-R direct-to-video adaptation.

In 1988, DC Comics released Alan Moore's The Killing Joke. This graphic novel presented the Joker's tragic origin story, though as it courted controversy because of how the Joker tortures Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), one of the few heroines in this universe. Now 28 years later, DC is bringing that story to life on screen. The trailer for its direct-to-video adaptation shows the Joker torturing Commissioner Gordon, Batgirl's father. Meanwhile, Batman reminds his foe of the stakes: "Perhaps you'll kill me. Perhaps I'll kill you."

The Killing Joke is DC Universe Animated's first R-rated film and gets its world premiere during this summer's San Diego Comic-Con.
