Coldplay's frontman says that Bruno Mars and Beyonce had to cajole him into joining.

Beyonce and Bruno Mars' Super Bowl dance-off wasn't Chris Martin's idea, as if you couldn't have guessed.

Before Coldplay performed on The Tonight Show last night, frontman Chris told host Jimmy Fallon about the band's initial intentions for its headlining halftime show—and how Bruno changed that once he was invited to perform.

"Our idea was, let's show a picture of togetherness in this time of everyone being so divided. You know, let's show, like, we all get along and everyone's voices count," Chris said. "Bruno was like, yeah, let's have a dance-off."

"That's not exactly what we wanted, no," Jimmy says, being sympathetic. "Togetherness."

"But I'd asked him to be there, so I couldn't say no," Chris says. "Then they were in rehearsal the day before, doing that thing, and Beyonce was like, come on. I was like, I'll just stay back here."

Never mind that dance-offs are competitive but also in good fun, much like, oh, football. Instead, let us all praise Beyonce that Bruno got his way, because that stand-off between the two of them was the most electrifying part of the entire halftime show.
