In honor of Super Bowl 50, we remember the nipples, sharks and middle fingers of halftimes past.

Coldplay seems like a pretty safe option for the Super Bowl 50 halftime show. What can really go wrong at a gig full of peaceful British romantics? Well, the past proved that no one’s safe at these grandiose Super Bowl spectacles and any show may bring one more scandal. And while we wish Chris Martin’s band a pleasant performance, we’d also like to thumb through The Big Game's halftime history and pick our all-time favorite moments.

Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake (2004)

Wardrobe malfunctions and live broadcasting are a match made in heaven, right? And Janet’s 2004 halftime performance is one for the books. Who would’ve thought that a little nipple action would turn into a worldwide scandal, split the CBS and MTV union forever, make the Super Bowl bosses replace popstars with rockstars for the better half of a decade and still be considered one of the top pop culture moments of the early aughts? With Janet currently rocking the charts with her new material, maybe it’s time to bring the sexy back to the Super Bowl next year?

Katy Perry (2015)

She kissed a girl and she liked it, but the world was much more interested in why the heck Katy Perry’s left shark was phoning in its dance moves during the now-iconic Super Bowl show last year. The lazy shark became an instant Internet meme and Perry even tried to cash-in on its popularity by registering it as a trademark (she received a firm ‘no’). Apart from all the sharky business, Katy’s show was everything we could want from one of the world’s biggest popstars. With this one she once again proved that she’s a proper firework and no plastic bag at all.

The Black Eyed Peas, Usher and Slash (2011)

The Black Eyed Peas were always about looking straight into the future with their game-changing releases, but what was especially nice about their epic Super Bowl performance in 2011 was the guest appearance of '80s rock royalty Slash who befriended Fergie while working with her on his solo album. 2011 also marked the year the Super Bowl bosses decided it was safe to bring the pop acts back on the field after the Janet Jackson fiasco. Kudos to them with picking the band who’s gifted us with the PG-approved bangers like "My Humps."

Madonna and Guests (2012)

Madonna is no stranger when it comes to scandalous behavior on TV (do we really need to bring back that steamy Madonna/Britney/Christina triple kiss?). But during her 2012 Super Bowl performance, Madonna for once wasn’t the center of controversy. It was English troublemaker MIA, who joined Madonna on stage to perform "Give Me All Your Luvin." Apparently MIA got so excited that she not only gave all of her luvin’, but also gave a TV camera her middle finger. No wonder it was followed by
"Express Yourself"—everyone has their own way of self-expression!

Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child (2013)

By 2013 nobody was asking which girl was running the world, so it was only a matter of time before Beyoncé would be given the privilege to sing her way through the halftime show. Beyoncé decided to put the love on top and made two other independent women literally jump onto her stage—Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams were brought back to the game that night. That’s how all the die-hard Destiny’s Child fans got to watch them shake it to "Bootylicious" all over again. Any way we can import Spice Girls all in one piece for Super Bowl 2017?

Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers (2014)

A year before uptown funkin’ turned Bruno Mars into a proper billionaire (hey, we’re just speculating!), he was already treated like pop royalty and invited to perform at the halftime show. Our favorite Hawaiian used the stage to unleash his inner rockstar with his all-singing, all-dancing riot of a performance and then invited actual rock legends Red Hot Chili Peppers to stomp the stage beside him. Girls hit their hallelujah all right that night!

Michael Jackson (1993)

The King of Pop was the first artist in the history of the Super Bowl to get a halftime show all to himself, and nobody was arguing with that decision. To this day, it’s considered the best Super Bowl concert ever—nothing can top a show that includes the whole stadium singing along to Michael’s "Heal the world" in unison.

Aerosmith, ‘N Sync, Britney Spears, Mary J Blige and Nelly (2002)

A lot of Britney Spears fans were disappointed when their idol was denied a chance to hit the Super Bowl one more time this year in favor of Coldplay, but at least there’s this epic performance in the halftime show’s vault. If there’s one event where the main forces of music should come together, it’s the Super Bowl, and it was a total pleasure to see these huge acts being such good sports about sharing the spotlight.
