A sequel has already been confirmed for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, despite the first movie not having been released yet.

Ryan Reynolds is set to voice the yellow Pokémon in the upcoming film, which is due out on May 10.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary Pictures has signed up Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street, The Cloverfield Paradox) to write the script for the next movie in the series.

The synopsis for the first movie, which also stars Justice Smith and Suki Waterhouse, reads: “In a world where people collect Pokémon to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent talking Pikachu who seeks to be a detective.” This particular Pikachu helps Smith’s character on a mission to find his father.

The plotline for the sequel has yet to be announced, as have the cast, director and other crew members. 

Reactions to the first trailer for Detective Pikachu were mixed when it was released in October. Many fans compared Pikachu to Reynolds’ anti-hero Deadpool, while others compared the CGI to “edgy creepy ‘real life’ pokemon art.”

Last year, Detective Pikachu was merged with Blade Runner 2049 in a spoof movie trailer. Video editor Adam Butcher combined the two worlds to create a surreal hybrid fo the film. In the clip, Blade Runner star Harrison Ford voices Pikachu, giving a completely different tone to the character.
