From classic party jams, to a few songs whose popularity, in retrospect, may make you cringe, this was the ‘00s.
Destiny’s Child – Independent Women Part I
Weeks at #1: 11
Years: 2000-2001
Just a year after telling us they wanted someone to pay their “Bills Bills Bills” Destiny’s Child hit us with a song celebrating being strong independent women.
Beyonce and friends were nothing if not a contrast in extremes.
Eminem – Lose Yourself
Weeks at #1: 12
Years: 2002-20003
The lead single from the 8 Mile soundtrack, and a not so gentle reminder of the dangers of eating mom’s spaghetti right before a rap battle, “Lose Yourself” would turn out to be one of the biggest hits of Slim Shady’s career.
Is it really any surprise? Combine Em’s insane popularity at the time, a hit movie, and a wildly inspirational chorus, and it would be strange if this song hadn’t blown up.
