The stars discuss the new season and pick celebrities they’d love to stab.

This summer’s going to bring more bloody fun with the return of MTV’s take on the classic slasher movie Scream. Scream: The TV Series follows the same approach to genre, mixing meta jokes with gruesome murders and a good old game of whodunit. The show returns for its second season on May 30, and so does all the chaos surrounding the unlucky inhabitants of the small town of Lakewood, especially its teens.

We caught up with the stars of the first season—Amadeus Serafini (Kieran) and Bryan Batt (Mayor Quinn Maddox aka Brooke’s father)—as well as the newcomer Kiana Ledé (Zoe) to discuss their favorite horror movies, potential on-set murder spree, and which musician they’d love to see getting stabbed on their show.

First things first: what’s your favorite horror movie?

Amadeus Serafini: The Shining.

Kiana Ledé: Final Destination. All of the Final Destination movies actually. I don't care, I love them all! Every death scene in those movies is just so shocking and creative and weird and crazy that it makes it enjoyable and I love it.

Bryan Batt: One of the first ones I saw was a TV movie called The Bermuda Triangle, which really freaked me out—it had this devil character that would go into people’s bodies. The other one was The Exorcist. I had a religious upbringing and seeing on screen that the devil was real was so scary. For the next several days I slept in my parents’ bed, which is pretty weird when you’re 30. Kidding! I was in the seventh grade.

Is it easy to scare you then?

Serafini: No, it is not easy to scare me.

Ledé: It's not too easy to scare me either. I love horror movies because of the creativity and the symbolism behind them. There's only one movie that scared me, which was The Strangers. In real life I'm normally the one doing the scaring by going up to people and just screaming loudly. A lot of the people find it annoying, but I think it’s fun.

Batt: If you do the settings right: if it's dark, I'm not expecting it, I'm alone and then someone jumps out of her closet… It will scare the hell out of me! I think I'm pretty easy to scare, and I was easily scared as a child—I was afraid of anything from monsters to any sorts of surprises.

Amadeus and Bryan, considering you both survived the first massacre, there’s a big chance both of you can get killed off this season. Do you already know who’s getting stabbed or will it a big bloody surprise?

Serafini: No idea.

Ledé: I obviously didn’t survive the season one, ‘cause I was not in season one. But we actually find out who dies and who's getting attacked and all that stuff as we read the script, which is maybe a day or two in advance before we start shooting, so we're finding out pretty much at the same pace as the audience. We know nothing at the beginning and it makes it more interesting and entertaining for us. Real method acting!

Batt: That’s all true, we have no idea who's getting it. But sometimes you see certain people in the design area or in the make-up trailer or someone’s working on the props and you go: “Wait a minute, I think I know who that's for!”

A question for you Kiana as a new cast member. Tell us about your character and how was it like fitting in the dysfunctional family of Scream?

Ledé: My character is Zoe. She’s an over-achiever and she's well-liked by a lot of her peers, but she does not have a lot of really close friends, so her whole thing is trying to get to know the dysfunctional family of Scream. She also has a deep dark secret, and she's not exactly who she seems and you will find out more about that in this season. Me personally fitting into the dysfunctional family of Scream was awesome—everyone was super welcoming and this being my first show was an incredible experience because the cast was awesome.

Remember how in Scream 3 the killer was operating on a movie set? If the murders would start on the set of Scream: The Series, who’d be the main suspect?

Serafini: Well, catering as all the cutlery…

Batt: I'm actually thinking it would be our favorite make-up ladies, Ignacia and Ashley. They're just out there and fabulous and I think it would be interesting to see how they would kill us, ‘cause they would come up with the cleverest and funniest ways to do it.

Ledé: As far as the plot goes, I think it would be fun to have Noah as a killer since everyone likes him so much.

We all remember the classic rules of surviving a horror movie from Scream, but what, in your opinion, are the rules to survive a horror TV show like yours?

Serafini: [In a menacing voice] There are no rules, just luck and mistakes.

Ledé: I feel like in general for horror movies we do know the rules, but I'm just gonna repeat them again for you. If you're an asshole, you're going to get killed. If you're a virgin and you had sex, you're going to get killed. Just don't be too careful and just don't get killed, you know.

Batt: Be a reoccurring character! Don’t be a regular or a very, very temporary character. I think being as nice as possible to everybody on set would help, too. Show up on time and bring cookies and cupcakes to the table reads.

I’m sure you can’t reveal much about this season’s plot, but can you hint on your favorite scene, character or plotline?

Serafini: You're right I can't delve into anything but Sage the Pomeranian [the dog from the pilot] is my favorite character from season one.

Ledé: I don't want to give it away, too. But seeing where Noah and Zoe's interactions go is going to be interesting: it could be a romance, could be a competition, could be anything.

Batt: There’s more fun for Brooke and her dad. He’s not the nicest guy—I don’t understand why he does what he does—but he does what he does. His relationships with Brooke are so strange. There’s some fun coming up. A lot of blood, a lot of blood.

Considering MTV’s association with music, which artist or band would you like to show up on set of Scream and possibly get killed off? After Zoolander 2, we all know Justin Bieber would totally be up for the task!

Serafini: Let's kill Miley!

Ledé: I would love to see Childish Gambino come on to Scream and get killed off. He's awesome and he's always doing cool shit especially in acting and just why not? That would give me a chance to meet him and talk to him and maybe become friends with him.

Batt: I’m kind of old school, so I’ll go with Bruce Springsteen. And I actually watched the first ever video that went live on MTV with a bunch of friends. It was The Buggles' “Video Killed The Radio Star.” So I’d really like to see The Buggles come on Scream, wherever they are. And you can kill them off. You can’t kill Bruce Springsteen though. They’ve tried, that’s impossible, the boss lives.

Did you already get any sort of social media stalkers? And if so, what’s the best way of dealing with them?

Serafini: Yes and don't feed the trolls.

Ledé: I think these days everyone is a media stalker. We all have these tendencies for sure. It's hard not to be! So I would say just go with the flow, wear your big girl panties and just accept the fact that you have a social media stalker, because everyone has one.

Batt: I don’t know, no one really cares that much about Brooke’s dad, Mayor Maddox. But I was at a big dinner party and no one there saw me on Mad Men, but one guy recognized me from playing Brooke’s dad. That was kinda cool.

And finally, if the universes of Scream movies and Scream The Series were to merge, what would the potential plot look like? And who’d be the killer?

Serafini: I think the plot would be that Sydney was in fact dreaming up all of the movies and she was in fact Emma stuck in Lakewood.

Ledé: I feel like on that show we’re already doing a pretty good job of merging a teen show with the Scream movies, so I would say this is fucking on the nose for me. As for the killer, I think it’s always the creepiest guy. So whoever you think is the creepiest will probably be the killer.

Batt: I have no idea. It’s hard to write these things, I would not want to be a writer on this show to keep the plot twisting and turning and have everyone questioning. I just like showing up and being surprised. And I always say, "if I do go, I want it to be bloody, disgusting and fabulous."
