From 'Deadpool' to 'Doctor Strange,' we’ll be seeing a lot of Chosen Ones this year.
“Don’t be a hero” is certainly not something you’ll be hearing people say any time soon. With Deadpool coming to theaters on February 12, we’re about to embark on yet another superpowers-stuffed cinema year. The one that will see villains becoming heroes, old friends becoming nemesis and surgeons getting a shot at becoming sorcerers. Put your comic books down and grab some popcorn: Here’s our ultimate guide to the superheroes movies you’ll be watching this year.
Deadpool
Release Date: February 12, 2016
Thought the superheroes are polite and well-behaved? Well, you thought wrong, as this one is no stranger when it comes to making a dirty joke (or three). Which is understandable: Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson had to hide his disfigured skin under a tight costume and create an alter-ego named Deadpool. Reynolds definitely had a lot of time to prepare for the role: he first played Wade Wilson in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie.
Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice Release Date: March 25, 2016
Did these superheroes run out of the Big Bads to fight? Looks like it, as there are two superheroes flicks out this year dealing with the themes of heroes turning on each other. This highly anticipated Zack Snyder-directed opus will see Ben Affleck putting on the iconic Batman suit with Henry Cavil reprising the role of the kryptonite-susceptible Superman. As much as we’re thrilled to see these two titans of the comics world flexing their muscles in the grand battle, we’re equally intrigued by the prospects of seeing Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Israeli beauty Gal Gadot as an Amazon princess with a rather modest moniker, Wonder Woman.
Captain America: Civil War
Release Date: May 6, 2016
You know how they say that it’s always about the third part when it comes to trilogies? Looks like the third installment of the most patriotic superhero’s journey will be as epic as possible. It’s Captain America VS Iron Man all the way this time around, and we can’t wait to see how it will play out: Will the brain outsmart the muscle? Or will the retro-hero send the talkative billionaire flying with no parachute? No matter which side you pick, the movie promises an endless stream of geektastic moments with Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Paul Bettany (Vision) and many others returning to participate in this Avengers office drama. Place you bets.
X-Men: Apocalypse
Release Date: May 27, 2016
Worry not: it’s not the end for the superhero team. Apocalypse is the name of the very first mutant in the X-Men universe who suddenly awakens and decides to change the world for the better. Yep, for his very own very blood-thirsty version of the "better" that sees other mutants facing yet another special effects-heavy battle. The titular villain will be played by the man of the hour, Oscar Isaac, while other recruits include Straight Outta Compton’s Alexandra Shipp, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse’s Tye Sheridan and other fresh-faced stars. J-Law’s fans won’t be disappointed either: her Mystique will once again paint all the action blue.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Release Date: June 3, 2016
We’re not entirely sure why the sequel to the 2014’s movie is called Out of the Shadows and not Out of the Sewer, but it is what it is. This time around, the pizza-loving quartet of fighting turtles will battle an evil scientist with the appearance of Tyler Perry, while their older nemesis, Shredder, will also be causing some troubles. Megan Fox will return as the turtle-friendly reporter, while supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio and a whole lot of famous athletes will be making cameos. All the hardcore Turtle fans will be happy to know that Judith Hoag aka April O’Neil Of 1990 is booked for a cameo, too. Tubular!
The Legend Of Tarzan
Release Date: July 1, 2016
Technically it’s not your typical superhero movie, but a lot of fans of the Edgar Rice Burroughs-created shirtless hero will argue with you. This newest movies about the owner of the best six-pack in all Africa stars Alexander Skarsgard in the titular role, while Margot Robbie (who we’ll also be seeing in Suicide Squad this year) plays his love interest. The adaptation’s director, David Yates, is spending 2016 buried in books up to his neck: later this year he premieres Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Suicide Squad
Release Date: August 5, 2016
Marvel may have its shiny team of world-saving Avengers, but DC Comics got something just a little bit more interesting and sinister. Meet the Suicide Squad—the unlikeliest superhero team of them all, simply because… they’re all villains! You didn’t actually think that once a supervillain is locked away it’s all over for them, right? Neither did the government, which decided to unlock all the cells and use the talents of these criminals for something good. The trailer for the David Ayer-directed flick looks totally badass, and we’re especially excited to see Jared Leto putting on the iconic Joker make-up. We’re also intrigued to see if Cara Delevingne’s performance will raise any eyebrows.
Doctor Strange
Release Date: November 4, 2016
It took a lot of time for the world-known neurosurgeon Stephen Strange to take a leap from comic book pages to the big screen (Marvel’s been planning it from the '80s!), but the time has finally come. The Hollywood-approved Brit Benedict Cumberbatch outran Tom Hardy and Jared Leto on the marathon for the titular role, while the ever-enigmatic Tilda Swinton was chosen to play the Ancient One—the mystic who helps Strange to embrace his future as a powerful sorcerer.
