The very first 'American Idol' showed the final season contestants how it's done.
Kelly Clarkson performed on American Idol last night to move its audience—and judges—to tears.
Kelly sang "Piece by Piece," the titular ballad of her seventh album, which is about her coming to terms with an absentee parent. One contestant cried. So did judge Keith Urban, while Jennifer Lopez almost did. Kelly choked up, which she blamed on being "super pregnant and hormonal," though host Ryan Seacrest saw the performance differently.
"You have us all in tears," he said. "The emotion that you exude always, but especially in that important song, it's just incredible."
Since she was crowned Idol's first season winner 13 years ago, Kelly has gone on to have the career that every contestant dreams of having. Piece by Piece, released in 2015, was her third album to top the Billboard 200; it was also the last installment of her six-album RCA deal that she signed immediately after winning Idol. Meanwhile, as Kelly also points out, this season of Idol is its last.
