It’s the first time EA Sports is putting women in the game.
By September, FIFA fans may be able to play their favorite video game with their favorite female (!) soccer player.
On Thursday, EA Sports announced FIFA 16 will include 12 women’s national teams for the first time, including players like U.S. favorite Alex Morgan.
In addition to the U.S., the video game will feature the national teams from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, and Sweden. The teams will be able to compete in the tournament, kick-off and online friendly modes of the video game, but can only play against each other.
The addition of women to the game was underway for two years so they could do the female players justice, vice president and general manager of EA Sports FIFA David Rutter told the Huffington Post. He said EA Sports has worked especially hard to create realistic ponytails for the characters.
Real players like Canada's Christine Sinclair and England's Stephanie Houghton also particpated in 3D modeling and head scans to give the game a more realistic representation of the way they played. Alex Morgan, another player to participate, said it's an honor to be included in a statement on the EA Sports website.
"I was once that little girl and I know how important it was to me to have role models for me to emulate on and off the field," Morgan is quoted saying on the official FIFA 16 site.
Look for FIFA 16 starting September 22 to see how women get in the game—let's just hope the video game goes a lot smoother than what FIFA is actually going through right now.
