"Whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania destroys you?"

"Negativity and Hulkamania: Two things that don't go together." (Pete Neems)

Love him or hate him, wrestling entertainment wouldn’t be where it is today without Hulk Hogan. But while Hogan is easily the most recognizable name in the business, he’s apparently a hard guy to work with. Over the years, hundreds of his opponents have stayed on their backs for the three-count, but far fewer have been able to keep their mouths shut about WWE’s most legendary Superstar.

News surfaced last week that wrestler Scott Steiner made an offhand comment to Hogan’s wife, Jennifer McDaniel, at an airport over WrestleMania weekend. McDaniel claims Steiner threatened to kill Hogan. Steiner told TMZ otherwise: “I told her Hulk introducing ‘Macho Man’ into the Hall of Fame is bullshit. He hated him. Everyone knew that.”

Whoever is telling the truth, two things are certain: Steiner was banned from attending WWE’s Hall of Fame event that weekend, and there is no love lost between these two guys.

Here are five other wrestlers who have nothing nice to say about the Real America, brother!

“Macho Man" Randy Savage

Steiner’s right about one thing: Randy Savage wasn’t a card-carrying member of the Hulk Hogan Fan Club, which makes Hogan’s intro at the Hall of Fame an interesting choice.

While the late Savage is mostly remembered for his many remarkable match-ups—including an historic match against Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat at WrestleMania III—he’s also remembered for his jealousy and over protectiveness of his first wife, Miss Elizabeth.

True or not, Savage accused Hogan of having an affair with Elizabeth during his wrestling heyday, which was only exacerbated by WWE when they wrote the supposed affair into a storyline.

Savage’s bad blood with Hogan culminated years later, not in the squared circle, but on a rap album “Macho Man” released in 2003. On the album’s title track, Be A Man, Savage refers to Hogan as a “coward” and a “punk,” and threatens to wash his mouth out with soap. Now that’s hardcore, folks.

The Ultimate Warrior

The Ultimate Warrior (or simply Warrior, as he was legally known in his post-wrestling days) pretty much hated everyone he ever worked with. But the bulk of Warrior’s vitriol was aimed at one target: Hogan.

Warrior’s beef (some may obsession) with Hogan truly ran the gamut. Through his personal website, Warrior accused Hogan of everything from sabotaging his wrestling career, to offering up his wife at the time (Linda Bollea) for a sexual encounter.

Supposedly in the end, just before last year’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Warrior and Hogan buried their proverbial hatchet. But at this year’s Hall of Fame ceremony, Warrior’s wife Dana Warrior (yes, that’s her legal name) made a joke about challenging Hogan to a match in memory of her late husband, causing some to think the Hogan/Warrior feud was never actually put to bed.

Here’s Warrior ragging on Hogan... for nearly an hour straight.

Jeff Jarrett & Vince Russo

Hogan left WWE for WCW in 1993 and became “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan, the villainous leader of the nWo. WCW gave many of their big names creative control, which meant Hogan could manipulate matches to his liking.

Hogan was set to wrestle Jeff Jarrett for the Championship at Bash at the Beach in 2000, but Vince Russo, who was in charge of WCW’s creative at the time, decided Hogan would lose the match so Jarrett could later pass the belt on to Booker T. Hogan refused to lose to Jarrett, falling back on his creative control clause and insisting on a win.

Rather than give fans a match, Russo told Jarrett to lie down in the ring as soon as the bell rang, and let Hogan pin him without putting up a fight. Hogan, who appeared confused beyond words as to what the hell was going on, pinned Jarrett by resting his boot on his chest.

After Hogan left the arena, Russo came out and told the audience, “I can guarantee you that this is the last time you will ever see that piece of shit in a WCW stadium!”

To this day, it isn’t clear if the event was real-life or planned, but the defamation of character lawsuit that Hogan filed against Russo in the match’s aftermath was definitely not fiction.

Bob Backlund

WWE

Before Hulk Hogan there was Bob Backlund. Second only to Bruno Sammartino’s run, Backlund held the Championship from 1978 to 1983. But when his popularity started to wane, McMahon wanted Backlund to lose the belt to the company’s up-and-coming rock star, Hulk Hogan.

Backlund refused to job to Hogan, believing he was both a pompous, spoiled brat and not that good of a wrestler. To work around the conflict, the company decided to have him lose to The Iron Sheik, whom Backlund considered to be a worthy opponent.

On December 26, 1983, The Iron Sheik beat Backlund with his signature finisher, The Camel Clutch, when Backlund’s manager threw in the towel to forfeit the match. Not even one month later, on January 23, 1984, Hulk Hogan beat Sheik to become Champ. From that point on, Backlund was never given a title match shot with Hogan.

Here’s a match from when Backlund was still Champ, and Hogan was just a newcomer.

Doink the Clown

WWE

The late Doink the Clown (AKA Matt Osbourne) wore his hatred for Hogan on his clown costume sleeves, once describing him in an interview with Inside the Ropes as an “arrogant fuck.”

Exactly why Osbourne personally hated Hogan isn’t clear, but there were rumors that it stemmed from Hogan’s involvement in helping cover up an affair that Randy Savage’s wife was having at the time.

“He’s a phony inside and out,” Osbourne explained. “He showed that when he did that to Randy. When he said that him and Randy had made up, after Randy had died, well that’s bullshit. Randy hated Hogan.”

Again, if Savage’s hatred for Hogan was that well known, it makes Hogan’s intro for Savage’s induction at this year’s Hall of Fame ceremony one of the true mysteries of WrestleMania 31.

Though they often squared off in the ring, apparently Doink and “Macho Man” were pals.
