As the sun went down over Echo Park, a line began to form down Glendale Boulevard as emo enthusiasts camped out to ensure a spot at this month’s Emo Night LA event, Taking Back Tuesday.

It may sound silly for people to wait in line for hours just to get into a dance party, but in its fifth month TBT has proved it’s much more than that. With guest DJs including members of Motion City Soundtrack, Senses Fail, and Blink-182’s own Mark Hoppus, the monthly party is a chance for those who grew up in the “scene” to crack open a tall one and get nostalgic with old friends or make some new ones.

This particular edition was a special one, as it landed during Coachella week. Though the founders (read our Q&A with them here) don’t like announcing the guest DJs ahead of time, they alluded that there may be some folks from the desert making an appearance. Favorite emo band: New Found Glory, not stereotypical emo but this was the first band that introduced me, thanks to a badass older cousin, to the scene so they will forever hold a special spot in my heart.

Favorite emo song: Taking Back Sunday, “Cute without the E”—so cheesy, but it reminds me of screaming at the top of my lungs with my friends and sister in my car while driving around the mean streets of Connecticut.
