From Rihanna to Kanye West, here are 8 of the best collaborations from Chris Martin and Co.

UK’s leading romantics Coldplay unveiled their seventh record, A Head Full of Dreams, today and this time around they’re sharing their dreams with a lot of guests: Tove Lo, Beyoncé, Noel Gallagher and Merry Clayton are all slated to appear on the album. But this isn’t the first time Chris Martin and company have asked on the help of others. While daydreaming about these new duets, we spent our time thumbing through Coldplay’s back catalogue to pick out the best collaborations the band ever released. Dream away!

Coldplay ft. Rihanna – “Princess of China” (2012)

This is not only one of the most renowned collaborations on Chris Martin’s resume, but also a success in experimentation that blends Coldplay’s stadium ambitions, Rihanna’s Caribbean sensuality, Chinese visuals and a wave of buzzing electronics. Talk about a romantic blockbuster! Chris wrote the song specifically for Rihanna and wasn’t even sure she’d agree to collaborate with him—that’s how humble the Viva la Vida hitmaker is! As for the video, it was directed by Tom Petty’s daughter, Adria Petty and inspired by some classic Chinese martial arts movies. Chris and Rihanna’s chemistry was convincing enough to score them a performance spot at the Summer Olympics 2012 in London.

Kanye West ft. Chris Martin – “Homecoming” (2008)

The piano-driven hip-hop ballad was the final single off Yeezy’s Graduation, but the song had a much longer life. It evolved from the 2003 recordings of Kanye and John Legend that leaked before the premiere and therefore couldn’t be used commercially. Kanye revealed that Martin actually asked him to change the lyrics of the song so that they’d fit his chorus better. And you know what mister President of 2020 did? He obliged.

Nelly Furtado ft. Chris Martin – “All Good Things (Come to an End)” (2006)

Back in 2006 Nelly Furtado was one of the main forces in the pop world with her Loose album rocking the charts all over the world. No wonder Chris Martin was happy to provide harmonies and join the crowded house of writers on the album’s bittersweet Latin pop ballad. While it’s unclear if Martin was inspired by Black’s “Wonderful Life” when coming up with this tune, it is known that the title of the song proved to be quite prophetical: Nelly is yet to release a record that would repeat Loose’s success. Maybe it’s time to ring Martin about a new collaboration?

Tim McGraw & Gwyneth Paltrow ft. Chris Martin – “Me and Tennessee” (2010)

Back in the day, when Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s marital bond seemed to be unbreakable, Martin decided to try his luck with country, writing a love song for the soundtrack of 2010’s music-themed drama Country Song. Paltrow played a troubled country star while an actual country star McGraw portrayed her on-screen husband. The movie’s dramatic twists and turns were sadly echoed in real life, when four years later Martin and Paltrow announced separation.

Coldplay & Cat Power – “Wish I Was Here” (2014)

This duet with indie rocker Cat Power was recorded for the soundtrack of Zack Braff’s dramedy of the same name. Braff showed the early cut of the film to Martin asking for the right song. When Martin came up with the lyrics, he realized his song was meant to be performed by a female vocalist, and he and Braff simultaneously thought of the American sadcore goddess. The simple arrangement leaves enough space for Power and Martin’s vocals to really shine on this melancholy-heavy number.

Coldplay ft. Jay-Z – “Lost+” (2008)

“Lost+” is an updated version of Coldplay’s “Lost!” off the band’s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends record, which includes a verse from Jay-Z. Mister Hova worked with Martin on his album Kingdom Come and decided to return the favor by providing a new verse to the uplifting song about not losing trust in yourself no matter what happens to you along the way. There’s also a “Lost-“ (an instrumental version), “Lost+” live recording from the Grammy and “Lost@” (another live recording). Lost yet?

Duets with Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran in New York (September 2015)

The annual Global Citizen Festival in New York City saw a lot of superstar moments this part September, from Beyoncé to Ed Sheeran. But the ultimate highlight was a surprise performance of Coldplay and Ariana Grande, who joined forces on stage to sing the hell out of Grande’s hit “Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart.” Apparently Chris Martin didn’t want to leave the stage that day, as he later returned to play piano while Ed Sheeran was “Thinking Out Loud. We hope Grande and Sheeran didn’t hesitate to invite Martin to guest of their future records, too.

Coldplay ft. Kylie Minogue – “Lhuna” (2008)

The duet with Australian pop royalty didn’t make it to the band’s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends for being “too sexy,” but apparently it was fitting enough to be released as a charity single for the Wolds AIDS Day. It’s not your typical Kylie affair ala Sexercise, “Lhuna” is brooding, atmospheric and even haunting which makes a great use of Minogue’s sensual vocals and makes her a perfect match for Martin’s baritone.
