About Me
"I had my first combo in Jr. High, bangin' out in the garage. I knew right then, it was no surprise, that all I want to do is rock. Played the violin 'til I was thirteen, t'was never my intention to stop. But Jimmy Page was working with more than four strings and all I want to do is rock. It's all I ever wanted." (From the song "All I Ever Wanted," on the upcoming Late Bloomer release.)
Frontman, sideman, renaissance man, Runtman,
solo artist and session ace. I did my first professional gig at age fifteen, and that was a long time ago. I've been writing, recording, covering, performing and producing music ever since. Actually, my first instruments were an "air" organ my dad got from his sister and a violin that my mom got from her dad when I was about six years old. I stayed with the violin up through seventh grade but all of those rockin' guitar bands that my brother Dan and his friend Kurt Paulsen turned me on to were too much. It was Heartbreaker by Led Zeppelin that did it. So, I scraped together enough paper route money and bought my first guitar and amp. Several hundred guitars and amps later (thank you Willie's American Guitars!) I'm still at it. What the hell else am I gonna do?
I have performed and/or recorded and/or toured with Ol'Yeller, Billy McLaughlin, PJ & the Terrorists, Souled American, Peter Himmelman, Cody Palance, Dan Israel, Kevin Bowe, Tangletown, The Hillbilly VooDoo Dolls,
The Lovejoys, Luke Zimmerman, Shannon Curfman...
I have also produced many commercial projects for readily identifiable clients like Target Corp., H & R Block, Levi's, Mattel, Pep Boys, Vidal Sassoon and more.
Multiple tracks from my Say No Morealbum have been used as sound beds on Minnesota Public Radio, National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" and several independent film releases.
In 2003 I was nominated by the Minnesota Music Academy for "Best Guitarist."
I have shared stages with Meat Loaf, Eddie Money, Robert Cray, Melissa Etheridge, Buddy Guy, John Mellencamp, Jimmie Vaughn, Wilco, 10,000 Maniacs, North Mississippi All-Stars, Paul Westerberg, Freddy Fender, Lowen & Navaro to name a few.
I recently produced a second full-length album for Luke Zimmerman (site).
What am I doing now?
I am presently working on music for a documentary film called "Polly Walks".
Late Bloomer:
Late Bloomer reflects the styles of my key influences. It's founded in roots Americana, blending folk, country, rock and blues. It's kind of a "Town & Country" album. It's like Andy Griffith jamming with the Stones. The other great musicians that played on this album are: Noah Levy (drums), Adrian Suarez (drums), Andy Hertel (congas) Steve Price (bass), Peter J. Sands (keys), John Eller (keys), Janey Winterbauer (vox), David J. Russ (drums, vox, keys), Jenny Fraser (vox), Joe Savage (pedal steel, banjo), Zach Kline (violin), Dan Israel (vox), Karen Paurus (vox), and Andy Dee (lap steel, banjo, Hawaiian guitar, ratchet). The album was mixed at the Brewhaus studio in Minneapolis by Rob Genadek.
