A nonprofit corporation can raise funds by soliciting public and private grant money and donations from individuals and companies. The federal and state governments do not generally tax nonprofit corporations on money they receive, as long as such funds are directly related to the corporate nonprofit function.

Consequently, these business structures limit the owners' personal liability for business debts and court judgments against the business. The initial period of stay is limited to 1-6 months, which could be extended up to 12 months.
