Alexander Gurwitsch was the first to formulate the Morphogenetic Field Theory and discovered the BioPhoton.
Morphogenetic [Morpho: Form, Genetic: generating] Field is the phenomenon when a group of cells form a particular limb in the body based on localized biochemical signal.
He later observed Biophotons (he called it Mitogenetic Radiation) and posited that this emission of light by the cells actually caused the Morphogenesis of the organs in any organism. His focus was on the development of Embryos and wrote a book on Embryology around 1920.
His research on Mitogenetic Radiation (BioPhotons) seems to have also led to a simple cure for cancer.
Similar works have been done by Dr. Rupert Sheldrake and Dr. Bruce Lipton.
