My first ever social media profile picture... I created a myspace account in 6th grade, secretly, without my parents knowing of course, mostly in order to communicate with my middle-school girlfriend. My parents found out about it pretty quickly and shut it down, but it reminds me of how nervous some parents (including mine) were about the amount of the social media/tech content we were consuming. Relative to today, we weren't interacting with it nearly as much of course... If my parents had seen a child on an iPad at the dinner table then, they would have thrown a fit, but you see things like that more and more today, without a lot of the concern that was once there.

  • This profile picture, taken at a middle-school graduation party, went up as I graduated middle-school and progressed into high-school. Obviously, this was a transitional moment in my life and I know I put lots of importance on this picture as I believed it could heavily influence my future social life.

  • My very first tweets early on in high school. This medium, for a long time until it began to get more popular, was my social media of choice for reflection and for things that only my closest friends would see. As you can see here, I was mostly tweeting about my freshman basketball team. Twitter, for me, is now a source for news and other random content.

  • My first instagram post was a picture of chocolates. Not artistic, not too engaging, but I guess I thought it was funny which seemed to be the most important thing at the time. For clarity, this was me warning my twin brother about eating my chocolates.

  • This FB profile picture marked a major point in my social media life as it was right after I cut my hair. Of course, it seems unimportant now, but I know this was a big deal to me, especially because Facebook gave me the opportunity to display this news without having to deal with explaining my motivation for the hair change (which was due to a football team hazing incident) to anyone. It allowed for me to announce this moment in my life and move on.

  • The moment I found out Instagram could be more than just a social engagement. I know everyone on Instagram now thinks they are a professional photographer, but at this time I thought I was really catching on to something... artsy and aesthetically pleasing Instagrams, how revolutionary!? I was all in on that whole "artsy" thing after this.

  • When you figure out that cute pictures get you social capital in high school... The first of many #tbts for me on Instagram.

  • High school graduation. Big robes, best friends, shiny medals for the two higher-achieving kids next to me... what else can you ask for? Obviously a seminole moment in my own personal story, and yes, definitely something that was shared on basically every social media platform possible.

  • My very first friends here at Northwestern. Lucky enough to do P-Wild, I met some lifelong friends and made some incredible memories. There was no technology or social media on this trip really, yet crazy enough, somehow we all became friends. Amazing group of people, and interestingly enough, going into college with a week off of tech/social media, personally, did me a lot of good.
