I sat down with Scott Webb who is the editor of Aqua Magazine for the last 20 plus years and we talked about the 2021 pool season, a year in review so to speak. Of course, there are new things that Aqua is doing to enter 2022 sprinting including their updated website and their own trade show launching in October 2022 - www.aquamag.live/. We talk about these two things to start the show and then we jump into the high inflation facing the industry as well as the equipment shortage and the state of the industry.

    29:44 My Take on 2021
Aqua is working on a revamped website and a pool show which is two new things on their plate for 2022. It is always good to see someone as big as Aqua evolving and staying up with the times. The pool show is probably the bigger of the two ventures as they have been out of the trade show business for about a decade now.
One very big thing that we addressed in our discussion is the runaway inflation in this industry, particularly in 2021. I don’t think we have faced such crazy price increases at any other time in this industry and the increase in the cost of chemicals and equipment may not be at an end when we enter the 2022 season.
Some of the obvious causes are just the general spiraling wage increases in every outlying field that affects this industry. For example, if HASA needs to pay their drivers 10% more to retain them, that 10% is passed on in the cost of the chlorine. Another factor is that chlorine and equipment were in short supply in 2021. This is basic supply and demand. More people wanted 3” tablets and since the supply was in low, the prices skyrocketed.
The equipment shortage came about from a number of factors hitting at the same time. You had a back-up in production due to Covid-19 shutdowns, then came the container shortage, those metal containers that you need to put stuff in to ship things here from China. Then the backup at the ports. A freeze across most of Texas that took out 1/3 of all equipment pads in that state gobbled up any existing equipment leftover form 2020. Then with pool building at an all-time high and each of those new pools needing equipment, it created a perfect storm for the industry. It wasn’t just one factor but many that hit all at once in 2021.
Another thing we touched on was a chart that was published in the October (2021) issue of Aqua Magazine that showed the cities with the most pools. You can pull that chart up here: www.aquamagazine.com/digital-edition/775a9228#118
It is interesting that in an area like Phoenix Arizona, there are just as many pools now as in Miami Florida. I think that is a good indication that pool builders are in a “Golden Age” where there are just so many homeowners that want a pool that in some cases they are almost a year out on projects. With record home equity and no real end in sight, the swimming pool industry is expanding at the quickest pace on record.
Overall 2021 was a strange and chaotic year and as we go into 2022 I don’t see much of anything changing. Maybe we will be more prepared for it and hopefully, they will have more chlorine and equipment next season but I am not holding out too much hope.

Heat Pump: Weigh Your Options Well Before Getting One
A swimming pool heat pump functions by allowing the heat to transfer from a warm area to a cool area where the heat is absorbed from the air and passes through the evaporator. Once the water is warm enough it is then circulated back to your pool. Since this process works in a way that it only transfers heat and does not create it requires and uses only a small amount of energy.

The Wrap Around Swimming Pool Concept
Most often traditional pool designs follow the kidney shape or rectangular shape and are built on your property. Now homeowners with limited property space have the opportunity to build the pool they have dreamed of for years, which includes the wrap around swimming pool design. Sometimes land peculiarities don't allow for building a pool close to the house, but walking to the pool is definitely not what you had in mind. It's good also to consider that getting to your pool may mean walking through grass or dirt along the way, and this will bring dirt into the pool. If you don't want a distance between the house and the pool then the wrap around pool may be a good choice for you, but there are many considerations to take into account.

Pool Pump: Public and Private Pool's Main Requirement
What makes a pool pump a top requirement for both public and private pools? Why is it so much of a necessity for several pool owners? Whether you are thinking of having fun in a public or private pool, the use of pool pump is so obvious. Ask people who are experts in pool maintenance and you hear them say that it is important to keep the water clean and free-flowing. And this has become a worldwide claim, whether you are situated in warm or cold countries.

Why a Pool Cover Is Essential
As the weather warms, thought will undoubtedly turn toward your backyard, and all the fun you'll have swimming and playing in your pool. You may already have been to the store to prepare, buying the right chemicals and other supplies needed for summer of relaxation and comfort. If you do not have a pool cover to use when the pool is not in use, you should consider making the investment. Covers provide many benefits to swimming pool owners and can help save you money in the long run.

Pool Pump: The 2 Main Reasons Why Your Pool Needs It
What is a pool pump and why is there a need to have it? Almost every household at present considers building a swimming pool as one of the most ideal way to enhance the space outdoors.

Tired of removing your industry chemical bottles and sprayer whenever you need to transport your Riptide between stops. Or do you have to shuffle the bottles around to get your other large chemicals to fit? The Riptide Bottle Caddy solves this issue for you. Safely store and transport your bottles with this unique and specially designed caddy!
These are handmade in Mexico and are crafted with chemical-resistant fabric that will stand the test of time. Each one is designed to match your particular vacuum system with a distinct color scheme. The riptide bottle caddy is orange and blue, the Hammer-Head is blue and white and the Power Vac is grey and white.
You can order your caddy here: clearpoolproducts.com/product/clear-pool-bottle-caddy?v=f24485ae434a
When I say industry-standard bottles it will hold a YellowTrine bottle, No Mor Problem type bottle, Bio-Dex bottles, and a regular size spray bottle. I have tested it with over 15 lbs. of bottles in it and there was no problem with it holding them. It comes with 4 zip ties to strap it down onto the vacuum cart and the clip in front is heavy duty and will act as a safety line if a zip tie breaks off. An extremely well-made product and one that you will find extremely useful.
You will find this an easy and convenient way to store your bottles without using the storage bin on the vacuum system and moving the bottles around when you need to make room for your chlorine and acid jugs. These bottles also tend to fall out of the tray when you hit a bump or the vacuum system in tow goes over a speed bump. Rest assured once in the bottle caddy they will not fall out of your vacuum system while it is in transport between stops.
The Vacuum System Bottle Caddy is easy to install. Simply loop the clamp over the cart handle and clip it on. I suggest using the included zip ties to secure it better to the vehicle and these zip ties are also color-coded for each vacuum system.
Clear Pool Products also makes these other great products for your vacuum systems:
    Riptide Cover
This is a sturdy cover for your Riptide Pool vacuum system. The cover is made of weather-resistant fabric and comes with two straps to tighten the cover to your cart and a second to secure it to your hitch during travel. Comes in Riptide blue. Made in Mexico.
Clear Pool Bags (Universal fit for all vacuum systems)
Our bags are custom made in Mexico we have 90, 200, and 400-micron bags as well as a green pool bag for heavy cleaning of leaves and other junk.

NPP is an interesting concept and something never tried before in the pool service industry. In a nutshell, they are purchasing large pool service routes in the Sun Belt and essentially running them from behind the scenes. Here is more about them from their site.

    25:43 Wrap Up
“National Pool Partners (NPP) is the nation’s largest multi-regional pool service company, operating as a family of brands across the Sun Belt. We partner with local businesses to provide the scale and resources of a national enterprise to better serve our customers, teammates, and partners.
National Scale. Local Brands. National Pool Partners (NPP) is the nation’s largest multi-regional pool service company, operating as a family of regional brands across the Sun Belt. We partner with local businesses to provide the scale and resources of a national enterprise to better serve our customers, teammates, and partners.”
For example, they purchased Patriot Pool & Spa in Austin from Hal Denbar who I interviewed for this podcast, and then made him Regional President, Texas. Now they are purchasing other large service routes in the area and bringing them under the Patriot Pool and Spa brand name. So essentially they are or will be the largest pool service company in Austin Texas and in any region where they purchase a large pool route.
They plan on bringing the pool service industry to another level, making it more legitimate with their philosophy and employee benefits. They will offer medical, dental, retirement plans, and life insurance and can do things on a larger scale than most pool service companies can’t do. Here is more on their culture and employee benefits.
“Safety: Employees receive best-in-class digital and on-job training. Customers trust us to be in their backyards with their families, dogs, and guests – we will never compromise on ensuring the safety of our team and customers.
Benefits & Career progression: Teammates receive industry-leading 401-k matching, health & dental benefits, life insurance, and career advancement opportunities.
Community: We strive to empower the communities we serve and encourage our teammates to do the same.”
They off the seller the opportunity to also invest in the NPP brand by joining the company at some capacity, so if the owner of the company sold is not ready to fully retire he can take an open position within NPP. This is a new way of selling a pool route ad by selling to NPP who can basically take over the route and absorb it into its brand, there is no seller training required and the transaction is quick and easy.
“NPP is brand new, and all of our Partners will be important leaders in our organization, helping to shape and influence our culture and success. You can join us on this journey by rolling some of your sale proceeds tax-free and benefit from the future upside.
We have owned and operated pool service companies, as well as some of the world’s largest route-based businesses. We have completed over 250 transactions and know how to create value for partners while growing a business to national scale.”
NPP offers something new and revolutionary to the pool service industry. They are not trying to come in and undercut single-polers nor are they a bargain-based pool service. Their overall intention is to raise the bar in the pool service industry and set a new industry standard of pool service.

Take Your Swimming Pool Safety To A High-Tech Level

On the market today are security technologies that take pet and child safety into consideration

Could Your Dream Swimming Pool Be Constructed By The Best Pool Builders Around?
There are 2 major factors to consider while searching for swimming pool builders. First you have to evaluate the company's track record and determine if they have a large number of satisfied clients during the past few years. The second thing to look for is experience. Whether you already have an idea or even a plan for your desired swimming pool, one of the most significant yet challenging areas of building a swimming pool is choosing the suitable swimming pool builders.

    Swimming Pool Diving Board Installation
Want to add loads of fun to your swimming pool experience? Consider a swimming pool diving board installation. The American Red Cross recommends that only pools with a depth of 9 feet or more should have a diving board installed. The water depth needed will depend on the board's height in relation to the water, and the length of the diving board.

    Choosing a Swimming Pool Grotto
When you decide to begin shopping around for various swimming pool designs, you will find that the possibilities are endless. With the pool industry becoming more and more sophisticated, you can have so much more than just a pool sitting in your backyard; you can create a majestic paradise. If you have the lifestyle and money to accommodate it, one way of creating a pleasing and comfortable setting for your swimming pool is to install a swimming pool grotto.

Swimming Pool Designs: Choosing the Right One for Your Yard
Congratulations, you have decided to buy a new swimming pool or redesign your old one. You will now need to give serious thought to swimming pool designs.

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzP93y4igR8
There are several benefits of having an automatic cleaner in your service account. The first is that it will save you a lot of time out there on your route. Look at it like having your manual vacuum going in the pol for 8 hours a day. This essentially allows you to just spot vacuum each of your service stops.
It also will leave your clients pool swim-ready each week which is great if you find them using the pool throughout the season. Again, get the image of you vacuuming their pool all day and you can see why the pool will be good to go at any given time. No more manually vacuum each pool every week on your route. This will allow you to focus on more important things like pool chemistry.
Having a cleaner running can also prevent staining on the pool surface. Sometimes dirt will have metal ions in it and leaves will certainly stain the pool bottom if left there for a long period of time. A staple or other small metal piece can also fall into the pool and I have seen pools saved from a rust stain by an automatic cleaner picking up the small metal item. The fact that the cleaner will be keeping the pool floor and walls clean each week ensures an overall better look to the pool as well.
Suction side cleaners are the most familiar type of cleaner for most consumers and the most popular type. A suction cleaner works off your pool's existing pump and is attached to the skimmer or a side/ vacuum port in your pool. Depending on the pool and type of debris this can be the most effective and cost-effective cleaner type for you. Most suction side cleaners retail for $400 or less.
The Suction side cleaner is the one most popular on my pool route as they are affordable, effective and there are a lot of different models to choose from. In most cases, I will suggest a good suction side cleaner since they are also easy to set up and easy to repair when something breaks.
A suction cleaner is also great because you can use the hoses that are already in the pool to spot vacuum the pool. Simply remove the cleaner head and attach your manual vacuum head and you can easily vacuum a pool.
You can easily equip your entire route with suction side cleaners by either selling your customers low-priced models like the Zodiac Ranger or the Pentair Lil’ Rebel. A lot of service companies include an automatic cleaner in their business model, simply add $15 to the monthly service and in a year it will pay for itself. Just the time savings will of course reap dividends and you can service more pools each day because of the automatic suction side cleaner.
I like to drop a demo cleaner in a pool and let the customer try it for 2-weeks. Rarely if ever will I get a customer who says they didn’t like the cleaner or how nice the pool looks each week with the cleaner running in the pool. It is usually an easy sell and I highly recommend having some type of automatic cleaner in every service account you have.

Pool Covers Come In Many Shapes And Sizes
Energy efficiency is the name of the game when it comes to the reasons why you want to use a swimming pool cover when the pool isn't in use. Swimming pool covers come in as many cool designs as you can imagine. Once swim season is over for the year it's time to start looking for an energy efficient, safe way to cover your pool for the winter months. You can find covers that either attach to the deck or to the swimming pool or hot tub itself.

Looking For Swimming Pool Design Inspiration?
This is the year that you're finally going to jump in and construct a swimming pool in your backyard. Deciding to undertake this project and setting a budget was the hard part, right? Probably not. You'll have to decide now on what kind of design you want for it. Remember you will be making a long term commitment so choose wisely!

Is An Indoor Swimming Pool Right For Your Family's Needs?
A swimming pool is a large expenditure, especially when you think about the short amount of time you may be able to swim in one if you live in an area of the country that has as much winter as it does summer. If you construct an indoor swimming pool, you will have access to your swimming pool year-round.

What's Going On Beneath The Surface Of Your Pool?
In your swimming pool water, there are many contaminants that can be introduced to it - and thereby to your skin - such as dirt, insects, frogs, and leaves and twigs. This dirt and debris could not only make your pool unsuitable for swimming but could damage the equipment itself.

What Can A Solar Pool Heating System Do For Your Pool?
Many swimming pool owners have installed heat pumps as part of the set up and construction project. With the advances in technology these are more efficient and effective than they were only a few years ago. The part of the country in which you live will usually determine whether you will want one installed for your swimming pool.

I go over a series of questions here with chemistry expert Bob Lowry in this series of “What Would Bob Do?” Imagine Bob Lowry Riding along with you in your pool service truck. That would be pretty cool. Since he probably can’t do this at this stage of his career the next best thing is to ask him what he would do in certain situations.

    Constant High pH:
This is an issue that we have talked about in the past. There are a few reasons the pH in a pool is constantly rising. The alkalinity may be too high. There may be water features causing aeration. You may have a chlorine generator also known as a salt system. Just by its very nature the saltwater system creates aeration in the cell. The plaster may be new and the curing process causes a higher acid demand.
Bob’s solution of course involves adding borates to 50 ppm, lowering the alkalinity, and turning down the water features. You also should be keeping the alkalinity at 80 ppm.
    No Chlorine at Your supplier:
Bob’s solution is pretty easy. Go to Walmart or Target and purchase some household bleach. It is basically the same thing as liquid chlorine but at a lower percentage.
    Odd Test Kit Readings:
You should have a backup test kit and a kit that tests for metals which is one of the leading causes of strange reagent readings. And carry some test strips to verify the readings is not a bad idea.
4” of rain predicted in your area:
This is a tough one because that much rain can cause a lot of problems for a pool. Bob has some interesting ideas and suggestions and I think he is spot on here.
    Airbnb bidding:
If you want to service Airbnb homes note that these are basically commercial pools in a residential backyard. Bob goes over some things to do to make this type of service practical.
Bob Lowry is the author of over 23 books but this has to be one of his most relevant and shortest books coming in at just 19 pages thick. But it is packed with so many essentials on residential pool chemistry that you will want a copy to carry in your service truck. Bob Lowry has been in the industry for over 47 years and is the Lead Consultant at Lowry Consulting Group, leads the Pool Chemistry Training Institute, and has created the Certified Residential Pool & Spa Certification Program. Pool Leak Detection - Don't Mess Around!
A pool leak is not something to take lightly. If you suspect that you may have a leak, get a bucket and place it in your pool (on the steps of an in-ground pool works well; for an in-ground pool, place a piece of water-resistant furniture in the pool, such as a deck chair, and place the bucket on that).

Pool Leak Detection - Don't Let A Small Problem Become A Big One
Have you noticed that you seem to be adding a lot more water than normal to your pool? Has your weather not been unusually dry or hot? Do you sometimes wonder if you have a leak? If these suspicions begin to cloud your mind, then you need to do the bucket test.

Swimming Pool Ownership - What You Need Besides the Pool
This article gives an overview of the peripheral equipment required to run and maintain a healthy outdoor swimming pool. It references heaters, pumps, filters and cleaning equipment.

Steps To Make Your Swimming Pool 'Go Green'
If someone tells you their pool has "gone green" the first thing you think of is algae and mold, right? Well in this instance, we're talking about going green - in a good way. If you want your swimming pool to be environmentally friendly, you can take steps to make it an eco-friendly one. An easy way to go green is to move away from using chlorine to clean it and moving toward a salt system. Bear in mind that saline systems typically bring chlorine into the water.

How To Keep Your Swimming Pool Bee Free
You want to spend lazy days around the swimming pool and not worry about being stung by bees, hornets or wasps. Usually around the swimming pool there is food, snacks and sweet sugary drinks and these food items will lure the stinging insects in like - well, bees to honey! Also, if your deck is wood it can attract bees that will burrow themselves into the wood itself. Hornets and certain types of wasps will also make hives in the corners of decks so keep an eye on these areas.

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IWtw-3zlBc
For shipping purposes, the Riptide SL comes shipped pretty much unassembled. When you get it out of the box it can look a bit daunting but assembly is simple and easy. In fact, it should take you roughly 30-45 minutes at the most. I did film the assembly of the previous version, but this one has some updated features that you should know about, thus a second video.
In case you are wondering they ship to all 50 states. They ship daily via UPS Ground.
Local Pickup is available in Riviera Beach, FL. If you live in California expect your new Riptide to arrive in about 4 days. If you live in Texas it is about 3 days. Of course 1 day anywhere in Florida.
Note that the battery and battery charger are sold separately. You can use various sizes of batteries, the one shown here is the maximum size you can use, a 100 AH battery. It is also the largest size by dimensions that you can fit in the SL cart: 12.9 inches long, 8.7 inches high, and 6.8 inches in depth. Anything longer or higher than this will not fit in the SL Cart. I suggest a 50 AH battery or even a 35 AH battery make the cart lighter. With the 100 AH battery it adds 60 lbs to the cart weight. A 35 AH battery will weigh only 23 lbs. It can be adjusted for any size AH battery, 35 AH to 100 AH, with the orange battery tabs.
The Riptide Vacuum System can also be purchased without a Service Cart and it is sold with just a stand-alone vacuum head and Battery Box. This is a great option if you are a pool service professional and don't need or want the cart or if you are a homeowner who just needs the vacuum without the cart. The current price for the vacuum head and Battery Box is $850.00.
To order or learn more you can go directly to their website: www.riptidevac.com
Here are some of the great features of the Riptide:
    1. High Torque Motor (uses rare earth magnets)
    - High Torque Motor- Our new High Torque motor utilizes rare earth magnets making it the most powerful vacuum on the market.
    2. The cord (new protective external layer)
    3. Stainless steel endplates on the vacuum head
    4. The cart is now e-coated before powder coating
    5. The Transport Rack Is e-coated now too
    - Electrostatic Coating- All of our powder-coated parts are now electrostatic coated (ecoating) and then powder coated over. This makes the finish of our components much more durable.
    6. Extremely high quality integrated steering knuckle
-Integrated Stainless Steel Steering Knuckle. This allows you to hook any pole directly up to the Riptide vacuum without the need for any adaptors while being effortless to maneuver in the water.
    7. The SL model Riptides now include a Diagnostic/Tool Kit with a battery load tester, the load tester is essential for quickly determining battery condition.
    8. The bags now have a different ring color to differentiate different microns.
    9. The bags (100 Micron and below) are double layers now this feature is making the bags last much longer.
    10. We now have a 25 Micron (specialty dust bag) this bag can eliminate the need to system vac a pool with a dust problem.
The general thought we are trying to communicate is that the build quality is exceptional.

  • diyswimmingpool.tips/d-e-filters-love-them-or-hate-them-tips-and-tricks-for-your-swimming-pool-d-e-filter/
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=_knLoJGZDUs
D.E. Filters can be the bane of your existence. Love them or hate them if you do pool service on the West coast you will have to deal with them. Florida and the East coast are not as many. I have grown to dislike them and definitely prefer cartridge filters.
There are three main types of D.E. filters on the market today. The most common is the traditional grid type D.E. filter which consists of a Top Manifold, 8 grids in a circular pattern, and a bottom manifold. This is the type made by Pentair, Jandy, Hayward as well as off-brand makers like Waterway. Pentair makes a unique D.E. filter known as the Quad D.E. Filter and this filter consists of up to 4 cartridges instead of the vertical grids. They also make a Quad D.E. Filter for their Sta-Rite brand. The last type is made by Hayward and is often referred to as a “Bump D.E. Filter” and is their Perflex D.E. Filter. These filters are usually found in above-ground pools and are not very popular in my area.
What makes the D.E. filter so effective is the D.E. itself or Diatomaceous Earth, which is used to coat the grids. This white powder material will filter out dirt, viruses, and bacteria as well as fine particles allowing for crystal clear water to flow back into the pool. If you have ever cleaned a D.E. filter you will notice that the D.E. will be coated with dirt and algae as well as fine debris, leaving the grids clean and white underneath. A cartridge filter cannot do this by design as the dirt, algae, and debris will stick to the pleats in the cartridge material themselves. The D.E. acts as a type of secondary media or you can even look at the D.E. as a shield that absorbs all of the filtered particles allowing for clear water to return to the pool.
There are some drawbacks to D.E. Filters that you need to be aware of. The first drawback is the D.E. powder itself. It is messy and if you have an all cement deck it can be a pain to clean up after cleaning or backwashing your filter. D.E. is also banned by many cities and if they find you expelling D.E. into the street they will find you anywhere from $10,000 or more. Some cities even ban the installation of D.E. filters entirely.
Another drawback is that if a grid or manifold has a tear or crack, the D.E. filter media will blow right back into the pool. Even the smallest tear will allow large amounts of D.E. back into your pool. This will turn the water cloudy and also create poor filtration leading to algae growth and the chlorine zeroing out. A simple fix is to take the filter apart and replace all of the torn or broken parts. But be aware that a D.E. leaking back into your pool is a common issue with a D.E. Filter.
A couple more of the benefits of a D.E. filter is that you can backwash the filter in between cleanings and that you only need to clean a D.E. filter once every 6 months in most cases. Backwashing a D.E. filter is easy and this will expel dirt, algae, and particles from the filter allowing the filter to run efficiently again. Since the D.E. in the filter traps dirt and particles so effectively the filter can go a long time in between cleanings. Typically you will clean a D.E. filter less often than a Cartridge Filter.
    D.E. FILTERS:
Diatomaceous Earth (D.E. Filter): basically this filter type uses D.E. to filter out the dirt, bacteria and viruses. It is the best filtration, down to 5 Microns.
    The Good:
    - Filters down to 5 Microns or less - excellent
    - Can be backwashed in between cleanings
    - Only have to take it apart and clean it every six months (In most cases)
    - Grids are long-lasting and durable
    - Water clarity is very good
    The Bad:
    - Can be a pain to take apart and clean
    - D.E. is messy and gets everywhere
    - Grids can tear and leak D.E. into the pool
    - Filtration Sq Ft. is limited
    - D.E. is banned in some areas and huge fines can occur if it is in the street.

Choosing the Right Filter System For Your Swimming Pool: Sand, DE, and Cartridge Defined
In this article, we highlight the main differences between the three types of swimming pool filters: D.E., cartridge, and sand. This is geared toward residential application and discusses the differences in filtering power as well as special considerations such as maintenance and cost.

Vinyl Pool Liners Offer Aesthetic Beauty to Your Pool
If you have noticed that your swimming pool appears a bit drab and not very inviting even during the hottest of days, a simple makeover may do the trick to help bring the fun back into your backyard recreation. It's not uncommon for homeowners to renovate the pool area and turn it from a plain cement hole to a private retreat to enjoy all summer. Replacing your faded, dull vinyl pool liner, or even adding one to cover the rough concrete bowl, is the first step toward making your backyard a more inviting place to swim.

Pool Filters: Essential Equipment to Keep Your Pool Safe and Clean
Owning a magnificent and excellently maintained swimming pool is something to be proud of. Pool maintenance and upkeep is such a daunting task especially if you have one that's big. One of the must haves in order to help maintain your pool water clean as well as inviting are pool filters.

    Vernon Hot Tubs Covers
Keeping your hot tub covered is very necessary when you are not using it. Other wise your tub will be damaged soon by debris, dust and other wreckages. In order to keep your hot tub clean and dirt free, you need to get a cover for its protection. Getting a cover for your hot is also essential in order to keep its hygiene up to the mark, as it can be harmful for your health if your tub is not properly cleaned. Keeping the tub clean also keeps you away from skin diseases.

I’ve been asked many times to put together a review video comparing the four major vacuum systems on the market today. These would be the Riptide, The Bottom Feeder, Power Vac, and the Hammer-Head Vacuum. Each one of these has some pros and cons and each one is a little different. Overall you really can’t make a wrong choice between the four. Let me highlight some features for you about each system in no particular order.

    11:27 Reliability
    12:17 Battery Life
    12:50 Transport Racks
    13:56 Conclusion
    Riptide:
This is probably the Tesla of vacuum systems. Riptide is always innovating. They basically only kept their vacuum head. And the vacuum head comes with a 10- year warranty because it is that durable.
The High Torque Motor (uses rare earth magnets) making it the most powerful vacuum on the market. The cord has a new protective external layer and comes in 40 ft or 60 ft lengths. The cart is now e-coated before powder coating
This makes the finish of our components much more durable. Extremely high-quality integrated steering knuckle -Integrated Stainless Steel Steering Knuckle. This allows you to hook any pole directly up to the Riptide vacuum without the need for any adaptors while being effortless to maneuver in the water. The SL model Riptides now include a Diagnostic/Tool Kit with a battery load tester, the load tester is essential for quickly determining battery condition.
Watch my Riptide review video here: youtu.be/REv3-5NlB-8
    Power Vac:
The Power Vac wins in the maneuverability department hands down. Imagine pushing an office swivel chair around the pool bottom and you get the idea. Ideal for vinyl pools because of the safe wheels and vacuum head clearance and great for steps and spas. It takes some getting used to for sure but it works great and is actually was the first vacuum system on the market back in 1995.
The Vacuum head is unique in itself with the wide-body 20 inches by 11-inch cleaning path allowing you to pick up large debris through the 6” diameter throat. It has 35 lbs. of thrust and comes with the choice of a 40 ft or 60 ft cord. The cart is also one the most refined of the big three and it is extremely well made. You can also make the Power Vac portable and easily plug it into their battery case (sold separately).
    Power Vac Review: youtu.be/y9ORwr_DQtI
    Hammer-Head:
The Hammer-Head has been around almost as long as the Power Vac. The vac head is shaped differently but it has the same power as the Power Vac. You can get the standard 21” vacuum head or the larger 30” vacuum head. For most service techs the 21” vacuum head will work fine. You can also get the cord in 40 ft or 60 ft length and the cart is probably the least refined of the big three.
NON-MARKING, BEARINGLESS, CAST URETHANE HEAD WHEELS
    STAINLESS POLE SWIVEL MOUNT
FEATURING THE PATENTED SMART SWITCH™ (The new HH1062 Smart Switch comes standard on all Hammer-Head pool cleaning units. SMART SWITCH™ features include a motor-saving overload sensor, two speeds, and an automatic shutoff when the motor is out of the water for more than a minute).
    Bottom Feeder:
    Fast. Light. Powerful.
Finish vacuuming a pool faster and easier with The Bottom Feeder Professional-Grade Battery-Powered Swimming Pool Vacuum. This cordless portable pool vac is so lightweight and easy to use, you can carry everything in one hand in only one trip from the truck to every pool on your route. With no hoses, long cords or carts, simply connect the 2.5-Hr. rechargeable lithium-ion battery and you are good to go. Weighing in at only 12 lbs., this compact and lightweight battery-powered pool vacuum is the lightest commercial-duty swimming pool vacuum system available.
The 18 lbs. thrust motor makes it effective at picking up leaves, twigs, small stones, and coins along with the finer debris. So there really is plenty of power.

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=osGDX_bdo0E
The Fall season is much different than Summer Time and it poses some unique challenges for your pool care service. There are some good things about this season as well as some negatives such as rain, wind, and here in California- fires.
    Chapter Marks:
00:00 What to expect in this video
    01:10 Different areas different issues
    03:10 Vacuum Systems
    07:08 Wind
    09:55 Cooler Water
    11:56 Every other week service
    13:03 Recoup chemical costs
    13:47 Take vacation
    16:00 Rain
    17:44 Fires
20:40 Do other work or take a break
Each area is a little different but in most areas, you will get more weather events. Wind and rain are more common and of course fires. So prepare for the windy season by having a vacuum system on hand. There are really great tools and if your pools get very heavy leaf debris a vacuum system is an essential tool. Riptide, Power Vac, Hammer Head, and the Bottom Feeder are ideal.
Customers may have an unrealistic expectation of how clean their pool should be after a heavy wind storm. You are really only spending 25-30 minutes at each pool and you really want to emphasize that it is a 3-week process. Week one is the surface debris. Week two is the bottom and week 3 is polishing up everything. Then of course the winds are more likely to hit again. To expect you to spend 1 hour at the pool is unrealistic and if you set yourself up for that you will lose money and won’t be able to finish your route each day. Limiting your time at each pool is the only way to handle the pools that are trashed by the heavy winds.
The colder water has some great benefits as well. You will use fewer chemicals during the fall months which should allow you to catch up on your chemical cost. If you spent a ton of money on chemicals in the Summer, you will find that in the fall and winter you should be spending a lot less.
Customers may think that since they are not using the pool you can do it every other week service for them. That is not the case. In fact, you charge your monthly rates based on year-round pool service in the areas where the pools are not closed for the winter. So you really can’t afford to do full service in the Summer and ½ service or bi-monthly service in the winter.
This is a great time of year to take needed time off. Plan it so you have at least a week off in October and take maybe the Thanksgiving week off as well as the week between Christmas and New Year. You will feel recharged and ready for the next Summer season. Don’t keep working like it is Summer in the fall. You will likely burn out.

110 And 115 Volt Hot Tubs
Finding a hot tub can be difficult. There seems to be only one-sided information from manufacturers and hardly any websites devoted to helping you find your perfect hot tub. If you rent, live in a small space, or must comply to strict HOA rules, a 110 Volt or 115 Volt hot tub may be your only choice. These hot tubs plug directly into your home's power outlet and do not require an electrician to install any additional electrical equipment. But what are the pros and cons of these particular hot tubs?

Why Choose an Indoor Hot Tub?
Are you thinking of installing an indoor hot tub? Nosy neighbors and digging a snow tunnel to your spa can make owning an outdoor hot tub unfavorable. Installing a spa indoors is great for privacy and to avoid inhospitable weather.

Mini Spas: The Hot New Trend
A strange new thing is happening to the pool and spa industry - mini spas are flying off the shelves! What is a mini spa? A mini spa is a small hot tub that can plug into your home's standard 110V-115V outlet. This product has been around for years, why are mini spas suddenly taking off as the hottest, newest thing? I have a few theories.

Make Your Dream Pool A Reality At Your Own Home
Nothing can be more fun than enjoying your free time at your favorite swimming pool. What could you desire more if it is being spent inside your own home with your loved ones around. Make this family bonding moment more memorable by having a recreational amenity in your home like a swimming pool built by expert pool builders.

Indoor Pool Rooms: Vapor Barriers Are Critical For Installation
Humidity and moisture from an indoor pool can damage not only internal surface building materials; but also permeate the interior cavity of pool structure (between inner wall and outer wall of the pool room). Without the proper vapor barrier, moisture from the pool room can migrate into these areas as air passes from the interior warm side of the pool room to the colder outdoor air side. Mold, rot, mildew, internal premature structural failure, decay, and deterioration of insulation can be found when vapor retarders are not installed, penetrated after installation and/or negative pressure has not been established. A dehumidification system alone cannot prevent moisture migration.

If you are in the market for a photometer test kit, LaMotte makes 3 models that are great for pro use. There is no direct comparison really between the WaterLink Spin Touch and the ColorQ 2x units, but for the sake of this comparison, it needs to be included although it is much more advanced. I think to consider whether you want to make the leap to the Spin Touch you have to look at the ColorQ 2x units and decide if speed is a bigger factor than cost.
The SKU for the Mobile unit is: Lamotte #3581 MOBILE WaterLink SPIN TOUCH Lab and the price is around $1,000. The Spin Touch test kit is great for so many applications. If you service Commercial Accounts this is a great way to keep your logs for the Health Department and Pool Manager. For Resorts, Hotels, and Clubs this would be a perfect way to get spot-on readings to assure that the public pool is safe. And if you are a Health Inspector there is no better water tester than this. Plus it comes with a 2-year warranty.
The 202 Disks seen in this video are sold in a 50 pack for around $120. The 202 Disk does 10 test factors in 60 seconds:
    Free Chlorine (DPD) 0-15 ppm
    Total Chlorine (DPD) 0-15 ppm
    Bromine (DPD) 0-33 ppm
    pH 6.3-8.6
    Calcium Hardness 0-800 ppm
    Total Alkalinity 0-250 ppm
    Cyanuric Acid 5-150 ppm
    Copper 0-3.0 ppm
    Iron 0-3.0 ppm
    Salt 0-5000 ppm
    Phosphate 0-200 ppb
You can also download the WaterLink Connect app from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. This App is free and will allow you to connect the Spin Touch to your smartphone or device and from the App, you can transfer the Test Logs and actually control the Spin Touch unit from your smartphone or device. You can take it a step further and Subscribe to the WaterLink DATA MATE Web which will allow you to store, send the log customer data. After you log the test results the Data Mate software will give you detailed recommendations to balance the water.
The ColorQ 2x Pro 9 is much like the ColorQ 2x Pro 7 with some notable exceptions. It uses the same photometer unit but the one that comes with the Pro 9 can also test for Copper, Iron, and Biguanide (Reagents sold separately). The handheld meter is easy to use and features economical liquid reagents that measure 144 tests per 30 mL size bottle for Free Chlorine, Total Chlorine, Bromine, and pH. “What If?” Episode
In this series with chemistry expert Bob Lowry, I take a page from Marvel comics and ask Bob a series of “What If?” questions. Bob applies his 48 years of pool industry knowledge to answer these questions and I think you will learn a lot from what he has to say about each one.
    For Part 2: youtu.be/ccUlCKF_Hp4
    Chapter Marks:
    00:00 Intro
    01:23 Bob Lowry Background
    03:22 Softball Team in Pool
08:14 High CYA low Adjusted ALK
15:25 Low pH of 5 in pool
What if the Softball team just called. 15 players are coming over in an hour to go swimming. What do you do?
Bob tackles this question by citing studies in the UK about rinsing before getting in a pool. Typically most of the stuff on you will come off in the pool right when you jump in. If everyone takes a quick rinse or shower by the pool before jumping in, you can save 60% of the chlorine usage – which is a ton.
Also, adding a non-chlorine shock like Applied Biochemists Shocktrine which is a 100% potassium monopersulfate, or Leslie’s Fresh 'N Clear Chlorine-Free Shock which is the same can give your pool a jump start before the pool party. You should also raise the chlorine by 3-5 ppm so if you test it and it is at 3 ppm raising it to 8 ppm would be ideal.
Your CYA is 200 and your ALK is at 80. How do you do an Adjusted Alkalinity reading?
In most cases for the Saturation Index, you would do an Adjusted Alkalinity (carbonate alkalinity/cyanurate alkalinity) reading to get the true alkalinity of a pool. To calculate corrected alkalinity, simply subtract cyanurate alkalinity (and borate, if applicable) from total alkalinity. Cyanurate alkalinity can be calculated by subtracting roughly one-third of your CYA ppm from TA ppm. If you want to be more precise, the exact correction factor depends on pH. The lower your pH, the smaller the correction factor. N easy way to do this is to subtract 30% from your CYA reading. For example, if the CYA as in this question is 200 you would get 60 as the result. If your Total Alkalinity was 70 then subtracting 60 from that would be an Adjusted Alkalinity of 10. This would make the water corrosive in most cases if you plug that number into the Saturation index.
The solution to this would be to lower the Cyanuric Acid level down to 50-70 ppm by doing a partial drain. Otherwise, you will have very corrosive water due to the low carbonate alkalinity reading in the pool.
What if your pH is 5 and to get it to 7.8 you need to add 100 lbs (25K pool) of Soda Ash?
This happens a lot more than you realize and in many cases in a fiberglass or vinyl pool that has been using Tri-Chlor tablets as the primary sanitizer. The pH will be so low that sometimes the test kit won’t be able to register it. Let's take a pH of 5 in a 25,000-gallon pool. It would take over 100 lbs of Soda Ash to bring it back up to 7.8-8.0 and adding that much product will completely cloud the pool up.
Instead, Bob suggests adding enough Soda Ash to raise the pH and Alkalinity up, particularly the Alkalinity because with a pH of 5 it is probably near or at zero. Once you get the Alkalinity up to say 50 you can switch over to Baking Soda which will raise the Alkalinity up without moving the pH much. With the Alkalinity at 80-100, you can then use Aeration which is a way to raise the pH using air. You can put a submersible pump on the first step of the pool and shoot water up onto the surface. Or turn on the pool and point the jets upwards. Aeration will raise the pH quickly and you will need less Soda Ash if you use this method.
Or add the Soda Ash in 30 lbs. increments over the course of 3-4 days. One thing to note is that once the pH and alkalinity get in range if there is metal in the water it will drop out of the solution and cause staining in the pool. Adding a sequestering agent and a Culator 4.0 would help in preventing the metal staining in a cause where metals are in the water from the very low pH.
Bob Lowry is the author of over 23 books but this has to be one of his most relevant and shortest books coming in at just 19 pages thick. Swimming Pool Cleaners - Pressure Side Vs Suction Side
Pressure cleaners push water to the cleaner, propelling it along the pool floor and occasionally up the walls. The pool is cleaned by the venturi vacuum the pressured water creates. The venturi effect forces leaves and debris up into a catch bag, net or screen.

Pool Building: Choosing the Right Company

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMMooe4zFOU
Everyone has to start somewhere. In the pool industry, it can sometimes be a long haul to reach your goals. And there is the added fact that we are in customer service whether you see it that way or not. One aspect is the pool service and the other is customer relations. I sat down with 6 of my group members and we talked about their successes and failures.
The members of the panel are:
Karl in Sacramento and owner of Pool Ninja Pool & Spa Service
Dean in Chandler AZ of Big Family Pools
Lance in Tucson AZ of Southwest Pool Service
Brennen in San Diego CA of Blue River Pool & Spa
Chris in Tampa FL of Pool Guardians
John in Coachella Valley of J&J Flawless Pools
Each member has a unique background and also services a different area so the challenges although similar do differ. All are excellent examples of successful pool service pros.
Here are some qualities that I think you need to be successful in the industry:
The first is you need to be a hard worker. This job is not for everyone. There is weather to deal with, wind, rain, heat, humidity, snow. You are doing physical labor all day long. I did a calorie count test and input the amount of weight I lifted all day and added in a rowing machine which is close to skimming the pool all day and found I burned over 2000 calories per day. It can be rigorous. So if you don't like hard work or working in 100-degree weather, this job might not be for you.
People skills are essential because you are running a service business and are providing a specific “work” in return for payment. You are not selling a product, the product is you and the service you provide. So you will make mistakes and customers will get mad and you will need to develop good people skills.
I take the trash cans in for some customers, drop off the newspaper in the driveway at their front porch, watch their house and feed their dogs when they are on vacation. Customers trust me so much that they will leave their house unlocked so I can enter and reprogram their automated system when they are at work. There are even customers that wait for me each week so we can chat. Every Christmas I give them a Christmas card and a gift. So remember you are providing a service and not just doing a job.
Good solid business skills are essential. You are in business to make money and you are not just out there “spinning your wheels.” So you need to learn how to draw up a business plan which includes charging enough per pool so that you actually turn a profit. Prices for service vary from region to region so it is up to you to set the best price for your area. It is not smart business practice to undercut your competition because they are probably charging what is needed to turn a profit and if you charge less... instead offer better service for the same price.
You need to be an honest person. Being a person of Integrity takes a lot of effort. I was never taught as a youngster the value of being honest, so I had to learn it as an adult. If you lie to your customers and they find out, your reputation will be damaged. And in the service business, your reputation is everything. I was going to put a pool light in for a customer and discovered that the breaker was simply off. I could have charged the $180 and they would not be the wiser. But I sent them a text message informing them of the good news. I've charged up a D.E. Filter and left the backwash valve open, resulting in 5 lbs of D.E. going back into the pool when I corrected the mistake. I could have told the customer there was a torn grid, instead, I told them of my mistake. It took two weeks to get rid of all the D.E, but they respected me for being honest even though their pool was a mess. Honesty is the best policy.

Swimming pool pH is often a test factor that is misunderstood or not given the proper attention. We know it is one of the big 3 test factors alongside Chlorine and Alkalinity but why I the pH important to measure and keep in the range each week? I go over pH in-depth with chemistry expert Bob Lowry.
Bob Lowry has created over 100 chemicals used in today’s Pool & Spa Industry and has written over 20 books on pool & spa chemistry. pH is the most important test factor for your swimming pool and if it gets out of balance there are many negative effects that you will encounter. The ideal pH is 7.5.
    Low pH will cause:
    Corrosive Water
    Stains
    Etched plaster
    Eye & Skin Irritation
    Cloudy Water
    Increased Chlorine Activity
    Destruction of Total alkalinity
    Stretching of Vinyl Liners
    Blistering of Fiberglass Pools
    High pH will cause:
    Scale Formation
    Stains
    Cloudy Water
    Short Filter Cleaning Cycles
    Eye & skin Irritation
    Poor Effective Chlorine
    Testing for pH:
Testing once a week is ideal. For a new pool start-up testing daily for the first two weeks is recommended. But once a week will give you a good indication of how stable the pH is in the pool water. There are various ways of testing the pH; test Strips, basic test kits, and Taylor Kits that use reagents. Alternate testing can be done with the ColorQ Pro7 Photometer testing and Digital pH testers.
    Lowering high pH:
If the pH starts to get high in your pool the only way to lower it by adding acid. Either a dry acid or liquid acid. Muriatic Acid of 31.45% is the most common acid used to lower the pool's high pH. Dry acid or Sodium Bisulfate is the dry form of acid that can be added to lower the pH. Some test kits like the Taylor K-2006 will have an Acid Demand Test. This is a reagent test that will tell you how much acid to add to your pool to lower the pH. A chart is included with pool gallons and how many pint or quarts to add depending on the test results.
    Raising low pH:
If your pH is low you can raise it up using a base. A base is the opposite of acid and it will raise the low pH up in your pool rapidly. The best base is Borax as it will raise the pH without raising the Total Alkalinity. Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) works well also but it is mainly used for raising the Alkalinity and requires large amounts to raise the pH. Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) raises the pH well but it also raises the pool's Alkalinity up so use Soda Ash if Borax is not available in your area.
Bob Lowry has written extensive Tech Bulletins and here is an excerpt from one on pH for you.
    Source:
    poolchemistrytraininginstitute.com/adjusting-ph-and-alkalinity-in-swimming-pools/
“You would think that adding muriatic acid, dry acid, soda ash, or even bicarb for adjusting pH and alkalinity would be a simple calculation. This is reinforced by the fact that there are charts and tables listing the amount of acid, soda ash, or bicarb needed to lower or raise pH and alkalinity. This leads you to believe that the amount of acid needed to change pH from 8.0 to 7.5 will be the same regardless of the alkalinity, CYA, borate, calcium hardness, salt, and water temperature. Not true. All of these water conditions have an effect on the amount of acid, soda ash, or bicarb needed to make the changes."
The article goes into very detailed explanations of pH and it is worth reading the entire write up by Bob Lowry.

Check out this custom made apron made specifically for the messy job of filter cleaning! It is hand made in Mexico and is water-resistant. Extra-wide sides keep your pants and legs clean, large pockets in the front are perfect for the Spring Barrel Nuts and other filter bolts. It unclips from the neck as well as the back for easy removal. From the makers of the Riptide Cover and Clear Pool Vacuum Bags.
The Clear Pool Filter Apron is great! Get yours today: clearpoolproducts.com/?v=f24485ae434a
I have always worn an apron when I clean my pool filters because let’s face it, no matter how careful you are the job can be very messy. I first started with a regular cooking apron from Walmart. That didn’t go so well as it would become very dirty and stained and it didn’t offer any protection after it got saturated with gunk. I then moved to a waterproof butcher-type apron which was good except that the waist was a tie strap and it always would come undone – at the wrong moments. It also did not have a clip on the neck part so each time I put it on or took it off I would have to remove my hat, which was annoying.
The Clear Pool Filter Apron solves these two very annoying issues by having a clip on the back as well as a clip on the neck part. Now I know the apron will remain on and when I need to remove it, I simply unclip it. Easy.
Although it is technically not waterproof it is very water-resistant. To make the material flexible it is cut from one sheet of material. So, the apron is very comfortable to wear and you can easily bend with it on. The sides are extra long to prevent any dirt from getting on your pants or legs. Overall the fit and style are perfect, and it is perfect for filter cleaning. The 2 large pockets in front can hold your filter bolts, lube, and other essentials.
If you do a lot of filter cleanings you need this apron. The worst part of filter cleaning is how messy the job is. If you are like me and stagger your cleanings in between regular pool cleaning, there is nothing worse than getting splattered with filter gunk and showing up at your next stop looking like, well, someone who was cleaning a pool filter. To avoid this bad look wearing this apron will keep you dry and clean all filter cleaning season.

Automatic Pool Cleaner: Utility And Advantages
Automatic pool cleaners run on electricity. They use the filtration system of the pool for an easy cleaning process. They are easier and faster to use as compared to the vacuums which require manual handling.

Benefits of Buying Above Ground Pool Pumps
Do you know that a pool pump functions much like our heart? It sucks out dirty water and filters all the dirt, debris and other unwanted particles from the water and purify it by treating with an effective disinfectant. After the purification, the 'clean' water is pumped back into the pool which becomes usable once again.

Using a Pool Cover Pump to Remove Water From Your Winter Pool Cover
This article takes a look at the electric pool cover pump. This submersible utility pump is specially designed to remove the collected water from the surface of a swimming pool cover.

Tips to Consider in Choosing Your Swimming Pool Design
People are now treating their garden as their own personal refuge whenever they are at home to relieve themselves of stress from their hectic schedule. Equal attention is now being given to the garden to beautify it as much as they do with the indoor living spaces of their home.

    Frugal Swimming Pool Cleaning
It is cheaper to clean the pool from the surface with free solar energy than from the bottom with expensive electricity. Messy pools start with debris; leaves, twigs, flowers, grass cuttings, dust, pollens, seeds, pet hair, and garbage being blown into the pool. It mostly floats on the surface for a couple of hours before becoming water-logged and sinking to the bottom where it decomposes. The bacteria brought into the pool by the debris interacts with the organic material, sunlight and water to produce algae growth. Removing the debris from the surface makes all kinds of sense and cents.

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV_aHSDoJwY
PoolRx is an effective way to enhance the chlorine in your customer’s pools but there are some things you need to know before you drop one in the skimmer or pump basket. It is of course not a magic bullet so using it in a pool that is more balanced will get the best results.
PoolRx is a Mineral Technology that does two very simple things when used in your pool or spa; it eliminates all algae and will allow you to use less chlorine during the pool season. The active ingredient is Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate (chelated).
What Chelated means is that the metals in the PoolRx have been bonded to form two coordinated bonds similar to what Metal Sequestering Agents do. This means that the Metal Ions will remain in the PoolRx unit with no metal ions being introduced into the pool or spa water. PoolRx is Chelated so the metal ions stay within the PoolRx unit itself.
Make sure that you choose the right size PoolRX unit so that the treatment will be effective. You can place it either in your skimmer or pump basket. When you first insert the unit run your pool for 3-4 hours. Then run it the normal cycle to get at least one full cycle of water from the pool, into the filter, and back into the pool again. The PoolRx unit should last 4-6 months.
It is important not to add the PoolRx Unit to a pool if the chlorine level is over 3.0 ppm especially if it will be used the same week you install the PoolRX in the pump or skimmer. This is particularly a caution for blonde hair swimmers as the high chlorine will react with the copper in the PoolRx unit and cause the hair to get a green tint. This happens only when you first put a poolRx in and the chlorine is higher than 3.0 ppm. To avoid this never put a PoolRX unit in the weekend of pool use and make sure the chlorine level is below 3.0 ppm
You should also check to see if there is existing copper in the pool water. The copper level needs to be at zero ppm. If there is any copper in the water the PoolRx unit should not be introduced. First, use a CuLator 4.0 and a metal sequestering agent for 30 days. Then you can safely introduce the PoolRx in the pool once the copper level is at zero.
PoolRx is ideal for a saltwater pool also. It will extend the life of your salt cell as you run the system at a lower output while PoolRx is present in the pool, typically 50% less output. PoolRx minerals also include a de-scaler that will prevent scale from attaching to the salt cell meaning less cleaning of the cell is needed. Also since it is generating less, the pH won't rise as high requiring less acid to be added to the pool.
You can also use PoolRx to clear up a green pool. Just remember that a lot of the minerals will be used up in clearing up the pool so a Booster Pack will be needed.
