August, 25, 2014, Austin, TX – Nearly one year ago, husband-wife hip hop duo, (RAS) Riders Against the Storm, made a conscious decision to publicly celebrate ‘healing’ and the ‘wonders of receiving’ when the city of Austin proclaimed August 29th as ‘(RAS) Riders Against the Storm Day.’ Today, as tensions, and historic social ills seem to be at a boiling point, Chaka and Qi Dada, Austin’s 2013-14 ‘Band of the Year,’ are calling for a celebratory day of
retreat, refreshment, re-membering, and rejuvenation at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard on Austin’s East Side on Saturday, August 30th.

Shooting Weekend: August 22nd-24th, 2014;All submissions must be shot between 6 pm on August 22nd and 6 pm on August 24th, 2014DiverseArts Culture Works is calling for submissions for the 14th annual production of Facing East: 48 Hours in the Life of East Austin. Facing East is a multimedia docu-arts exhibit of visual media, shot within a single 48-hour period in East Austin (east of IH 35). Artists will shoot between 6pm August 22nd through 6pm on August 24th 2014 to capture a brief portrait of life on the East Side. So if you’re talented with a lens and enjoy capturing the life around you on film, then we encourage you to share your perspective on East Austin’s rapidly changing—and in some ways, unchanging—landscape with us @ Facing East!

Recently, I happened to come across the lovely Beth Consetta Rubel filming an interview at our headquarters, the New East Arts Gallery,
for an upcoming documentary series at UT featuring the East Side! You should definitely go check it out once it’s been released, as well as
our new video series coming out soon on the DiverseArts Culture Works
youtube channel that I’m pretty excited about. : )
Also, for all those who aren’t familiar with Ms. Rubel and her works,
you are always welcome to pay us a visit at our gallery in downtown
East Austin. We’ll be holding a closing reception for Consetta this
Friday, August 1 @ 7:00 pm at the gallery, so this could be your last
chance to check out all of her amazing pieces we have on display.

Hello there community! My name is Alex and I’m the new intern in town here at DiverseArts Culture Works. I’m a 23-year-old college student working
towards a degree in English with humble aspirations towards a future career in the publishing business (that’s right folks, one of those) who has generously been offered a social media position by DACW. I hope to spread the word about all of the wonderful and important things the
organization is doing out here on the East Side, and maybe, hopefully, definitely, invite all of you out there to join in as well and help support our efforts in keeping our rag-tag crew together and thriving. Expect tons of posts by yours truly detailing the various music and artistic events arranged by DiverseArts, as well as my own experiences as a new addition to the DiverseArts group.
