There is a mild risk that we might hint at something we shouldn’t or spoil this show for you. If you are really worried, just stop reading and go watch it right now. It’s on Fox, have a look at the trailer below.

The plot of The Lucifer the TV Show

In the TV show Lucifer, the Devil comes to LA because he’s bored of hell. He’s immortal, can seduce anyone and spends his time having fun. He makes a point of never hiding who he is, it’s just no-one believes him.

At the start of the season an old friend of Lucifer is killed in front of him and he decides to get revenge, which involves him working with the police detective on the case.

This cop just so happens to be the one person on earth who is immune to his charms. She’s a serious detective with something to prove. He’s the Devil and likes causing trouble, drinking and asking people about their deepest desires. Strangely they work well together. Their friction and chemistry is a huge part of the appeal of the show.

The Lucifer Cast

Warning the next section will feature some spoilers. You have been warned.

Lucifer Morningstar

Lucifer, the lord of hell is played by Tom Ellis, a British actor who previously started in the TV show Rush. Lucifer is of course the Devil but not a scary sort of devil, more naughty. He’s here to have fun, it just so happens that he ends up solving crimes because it’s interesting. Lucifer cannot be harmed in any way, that is unless he's near Detective Decker but why?

Mazikeen

Working with Lucifer in his nightclub is a demon in human form, Mazikeen. Played by Lesley-Ann Brandt who you will recognize from Spartacus: Blood and Sand. She’s incredibly loyal to Lucifer and is quite happy to beat people up just because. She also has 'demon blades' which are one of the few things that can hurt magical beings. In Season 2 Mazikeen becomes close friends with Detective Decker's kid, Trixie Espinoza and it is one of the best things about the show.

Amenadiel

Lucifer’s brother Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) also makes the trip to the human world. Their relationship is tense because Amenadiel wants Lucifer to go back to hell and Lucifer wants stay in LA because he's enjoying himself. Amendadiel can slow down time at will (but he still gets to move at normal speed) and also still has his wings so can use them for wing stuff like scaring mortals, and you know, flying. Amenadiel also has a bit of a thing for Mazikeen but they have issues because he's an angel and she's a demon.

Chloe Decker

Detective Decker (Lauren German) is a tough cop and the one person on the planet who is immune to Lucifer’s charms. Of course this makes her irresistible to Lucifer. She has no time for nonsense which means she is exasperated by him at first, but finds his strange abilities very useful when it comes to closing cases. Her presence seems to remove Lucifer's immortality.

Dan Espinoza

Decker has a child with Dan Espinoza, who is also police detective in her precinct. They were together but have since separated. At times Decker suspects that Espinoza might be a dirty cop but with Lucifer's help he's shown to be clean. Espinoza is played by Kevin Alejandro who was in True Blood and has even played another DC comics character appearing as Sebastian Blood in Arrow.

Linda Martin

Because it’s set in LA, Lucifer gets a psychiatrist. Linda Martin doesn’t believe that Lucifer is the devil but does think he’s got some issues he needs to talk about. At first she thinks his stories of angels, demons and god are all just metaphors family problems until she is shown the truth. Linda is played by Rachael Harris, who has previously been in Suits and appeared in the Hangover.

Charlotte Richards / Mum

In season two Lucifer's mom (or Mum as he calls her) escapes from Hell and comes to LA. She takes the body of Charlotte Richards a lawyer based in L.A. who is involved in one of Lucifer's cases. Lucifer's Mum struggles with understanding human society but given she's a super-strong goddess in the body of a model she can overcome most issues. She's played by Tricia Helfer who previously appeared in Battlestar Galactica.

Ella Lopez

A forensic scientist working at the LAPD. Lopez appears in season 2 she a maverick but also religious which causes some interesting conversations with Lucifer and Decker. Lopez is played by Aimee Garcia who you may recognise from Dexter where she was Jamie Batista.

Who Is Lucifer Morningstar?

The version of Lucifer Morningstar for the TV show is based on the character in the popular and award winning Sandman graphic novels by Neil Gaiman. This Lucifer is charming and leaves hell because he is bored of dealing with the souls of humans. He sets up a nightclub called LUX in LA. This version of Lucifer is much more of a fallen angel, than the source of all evil.

He can make anyone reveal their deepest desire, which he uses to help Decker solve crimes. He’s got a few other powers that get revealed. He’s not really evil but does believe people must pay their debts, especially if they do a deal with him.

In the original graphic novel Lucifer was styled on David Bowie but Tom Ellis has said he plays him as somewhere between Oscar Wilde and Mick Jagger.

Lucifer Season 1

The first series of Lucifer aired in January 2016 and gained a average of 3.89 million viewers per episode. The season had 13 episodes in total.

Lucifer season 2

The second season of Lucifer introduces a few more family members into the fun. It first aired in September 2016, but only features 18 episodes instead of the expected 22 because the last four episodes are being pushed into the third season.

Lucifer Season 3 Release date

Season 3 has already been confirmed with transmission this year, it even has a promo! The structure of the third season will be interesting because of how it was ordered and scripted. Originally there were only going to be 18 episodes in season 2. However Fox ordered four more to take it up to a full 22, but because of the late addition of these episodes they fit outside the planned plotting, and will instead be stuck on the start of season 3.

Joe Henderson (The executive producer) has said they are going to use these four special episodes to play with the traditional format and to explore interesting character backgrounds. Could we see how Mazikeen met Lucifer? Or Amenadiel when he was young? We will have to wait until the Fall to find out.
