The English singer discusses how she wrote the tracks on her self-titled debut.

Veiga Sanchez, better known onstage as Salt Ashes, grew up singing pop songs. But as she grew up and started to pen her own tunes this English singer found her home in the electronic music realm. Blending her powerful vocals and emotional lyrics with synths and bass, she crafted a collection of tunes take you to another place. We had the chance to get to know this up-and-comer a little better. Find out more about Salt Ashes below.

Hometown: Brighton, England

Let's start at the beginning. What's the first song you remember singing along to?

I used to sing all the time as a child and have home recorded videos of me as a four-year-old singing all the wrong words to "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles. It was my favorite song for years. Then "Don’t Speak" by No Doubt happened.

What's the story behind the moniker Salt Ashes?

I saw the words Salt Ashes scratched on the side of a wooden boat on Brighton seafront and instantly fell in love with the sound of them and how I connected with it. At the time I was using a lot of imagery with fire and seas which made Salt Ashes seem to fit my style of writing.

Your vocals are very powerful in your music even though there's a lot going on with the electronic sounds. What drew you to that style of music?

I love how changeable electronic music can be and how you can get so lost in it. But I’m really not sure how it happened. I think it just found me.

What's the most memorable song you worked on for the album?

Probably "If You Let Me Go." I wrote this song in an hour after a fight I’d had with my boyfriend. Tracks don’t always take that little time to write so when that happens it’s incredible.

What's your favorite to perform?

Right now, I love performing "Whatever You Want Me To Be." I love the way the track builds and crescendos. I probably love performing it the most because it one of the newer live tracks to be honest. I’m sure my favorite will change according to my mood and what’s happening in my life at the time!

How did growing up in Brighton inspire you musically?

Brighton is awesome for inspiration. It’s a massive hub full of creative and talented people, which always pushes you to be better than you already are as there’s always someone out there honing their craft more than you etc.

What is "Save It" about?

"Save it" is a about having a love that other people don’t approve of but you don’t care what they think. The love is so powerful and passionate that that outweighs other people's worries.

If there's one DJ or producer you'd want to collaborate with, who would it be?

Right now, it would be Lindstrøm. His track, "Closing Shot," is a tune. I’ve been a fan for a long time anyway but his new work is particularly magical, so would love to see what we’d come up with together.

What is next for Salt Ashes?

Hopefully more gigging, a tour and more releases!
