'blackSUMMERS’night' - Maxwell

Five years after releasing BLACKsummers'night, Maxwell is finally back with the second part of his musical trilogy. blackSUMMERS'night, which was recorded in New York City over the past few years with longtime collaborator Hod David. Keeping to his musical signature, this record has the same suaveness and swag the first one. With songs like "Hostage," "1990x" and the lead single, "Lake By the Ocean," you can't help but give Maxwell your undivided attention because it feels like he's singing directly to you, which you'll also probably feel if you see him in concert.

But aside from his heart-melting, crooning ways, there are a couple of tunes will get you instantly grooving. "III" and the horn-heavy "Fingers Crossed." If there's anything you can take away from Maxwell's new album, it's the fact that soul is still very much alive in music today. And if there's anyone who can really sing with some soul, it's Maxwell.

'California' - Blink-182

Despite Tom DeLonge's departure in 2015, Blink 182 continued to not only play shows but also move forward with a new album. After recruiting Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio to not only perform with remaining members Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker, but also record their next album—California. With the addition of Matt, it was only natural for Blink fans to question how the dynamic and, more importantly, the sound would change with the new member, who's played more than just pop punk. However, not only does he blend in nicely onstage with Mark and Travis but he also propels Blink 182 into the future on this record. What makes California special is the fact that we're being taken back to the sound we heard when we first fell for the band years ago.

As we've mentioned before, Matt isn't trying to be Tom DeLonge 2.0. Instead, he's just sounding like the Tom that we seemed to have missed from years past. And it's in this nostalgia that Blink 182 finds its strengths. From their single "Bored to Death" to the high energy "Rabbit Hole," these are the rhythms, melodies and voices that feel at home in our musical memories. Whether you're a Blink 182 lifer or a rookie to their sound, California is a great (re-)introduction to a band that shaped a generation of '90s kids lives and plan to do it for the ones to come.

'The Bride' - Bat for Lashes

Considering we're in the middle of wedding season, it seems fitting for Bat for Lashes' new record to drop. Appropriately titled The Bride, Bat for Lashes, aka Natasha Khan, depicts the story of a woman who's nervous about getting married and what happens as she makes her way to the altar. While most wedding stories end with "Happily Ever After," this one has a darker finish. Her groom doesn't make it to the altar because he's killed in a car accident that happens on his way to the ceremony. Yep, let those gasps out.

As awful as this plot twist is, she beautifully captures this in "Honeymooning Alone," which starts off with the sound of a car crash, as well as "Never Forgive the Angels"—a song that shows her frustrations with the situation and her own spirituality. While The Bride might not be a lighthearted record, it's surely one that will whisk you away on a sonic odyssey. The orchestral elements will easily envelope you and take you into a another space and into the head and heart of this heroine as she tries to find the light at the end of her dark tunnel. And although there are many musical bumps in the road as we hear in "Land's End," "If I Knew" and "Close Encounters," there's a sense of hope by the end, which is conveyed in the uplifting song, "I Will Love Again."

'Freetown Sound' - Blood Orange

Blood Orange, aka Dev Hynes, is back with his third album, Freetown Sound. And it seems to be one of his more personal pieces of work. While he isn't shy about sharing his personal beliefs or thoughts about particular issues (i.e. police brutality), Freetown Sound explores race, sexism, religion and sex.

"I have just finished making an album about my life, my upbringing, being black in England, being black in America," he said in a statement. "...my movement to this country at the age of 21, the same age that my mother moved from Guyana to London, and my father from Sierra Leone to London.Freetown Sound, the name of my album, is taken from Freetown where my father was born."

Named after his father's birthplace and capital of Sierra Leone, the lyrics are deep and though-provoking. However, his creative use of sound and arrangements give an otherwise serious topic a fun pop beat. "Better Numb" will clutch at your heart and is an interesting closing song choice. Meanwhile "But You" is one of the more lyrically uplifting tunes on the album.  With 17 songs on the record, you'll have a hefty playlist of songs to fill your ears for the rest of the summer.

'GØGGS' - GØGGS

What happens when you put Ty Segall, Charles Moothart of Fuzz and Ex-Cult singer Chris Shaw into a room together? Say hello to GØGGS. The new rock collaboration have been toying around with sounds for the past three years, and now they're ready to show the world what they made with the band's self-titled debut. Despite each member's different approach to music, they worked it out and created a collection of tunes that will blow you away—literally. From the moment you hear the LP opener, "Falling in," all the way to their single, "Glendale Junkyard," each track sounds like these three have been playing together for years. Now don't we wish all collaborations could be this seamless.
