The surfers-turned-producers discuss the perks of being Australian while on a US tour.

You know you’re in for some good times when you meet your best friend at a surfing competition and eventually decide to start catching waves in the world of house music, too. That’s the story of Paul “Fish” Fisher and Leigh “Sedz” Sedley, the pair behind Australian house duo Cut Snake that just released a new EP Magic and is turning the US into one big beach party on their current tour. We chatted with Fish about the origins of the duo’s name, devotion to his stunning homeland and horse betting.

How are you, where are you and what are you up to?

Mate, I’m good. A little tired. We’ve been on the road touring for our latest EP. Currently I’m in Hollywood, getting things together before we have to leave. Things are good!

So you moved to LA and left Australia for good?

I normally do Australia for about five months out of the year. And then from April to December we’re in America. So around Christmas time I get back to Australia. I need to get my Aussie fix.

So it’s basically summer all year long for you, right?

Eh-xactly!

So you’re quite serious about the surfing thing… Is it safe to say your roots come from the ocean?

Oh 100%! I still try to surf almost every day. When I’m in Australia I’m at the beach half of the day. It’s kind of weird for me to live in LA, ‘cause I’m not near the beach here. It takes me 30-40 minutes to get to the beach. Surfing is how it all began for us. We met at a surfing contest when we were about 12. We’d always see each other at events, would compete against each other and eventually started traveling around the world surfing together.

So your music is perfect for any type of water activity, correct?

We don’t always think about it like that, but it tends to end up like that in the beach towns. Our music has a lot of beach culture in it. But we don’t go into the studio thinking that, it just comes out with the beachy vibes. Plus when you’re in the dark room making music, all you can think about is a beach!

Did you ever think about setting up a surfing/music festival?

We always think about having certain parties on the beach and how we can do it. I think eventually down the line we're definitely going to do more beach parties in Australia. Festival is a different thing though. A lot of our fans come from the beach lifestyle (us being surfers), so it seems right to have the party on the beach. Whenever we play day-time parties, we love them the most. We’re just trying to get the fanbase bigger and once we feel like it’s big enough to do it, we’ll do it. You gotta do it right!

What’s the best thing about being Australian?

It’s pretty funny, in America this accent gets you a lot of good things, I’m telling you that much. People love Australians over here. I don’t know what it is, but they want to help you more. If you’re Aussie, people will be like, "Oh, I have a friend who can help you with this and that."

For me, when I’m coming home I’m always blown away by how beautiful it is. It’s the most beautiful place in the world, really. I never wanna leave.

Did you ever actually cut a snake?

Mate, I HATE snakes. The term is actually ‘mad as a cut snake’, ‘cause when you cut a snake’s head off, it goes mad. That’s Australian term. It was just an Aussie name that we wanted to bring around the world.

So you never tried to drink snake’s blood or anything like that?

They tried to put a python on me last year, and I didn’t know what to do. These things scare me more than anything in the world. I’m not scared of sharks or any animals. Something about snakes scare me.

PETA is probably gonna get mad at us right now, but do you own any awesome snake-leather outfits?

We owned a couple of snake things that go on your head. But not made out of real snakes, just props. But we get bored of one thing, so we never really wore these things. For Halloween parties we always thought about dressing up as big pythons.

There’s an Australian movie Cut Snake… Did you watch it?

No!

It’s an Aussie crime movie.

I might check that out. I know that there’s a horse in Australia named Cut Snake and it always wins. So a lot of people were inboxing us on Instagram saying, "Thanks for the win." We went back to Australia and I put a bid on that horse, who won five races in a row. As soon as I put a bid on it, it came fifth. I came back to LA and it won again.

You should just get the horse on tour with you. How hard can that really be?!

Yeah. Everyone who gets too close to the stage gets a kick in the head. No need for security!

Your new EP is called Magic. What magic powers would you like to possess?

I’d like to stay young forever.

There’s botox for that—just go to the Venice beach.

I just want to have my youth forever, man. As you get older, it goes quicker. Obviously you’re having just as much fun if not more, but you’re always like, I wanna keep doing this forever.
