Did our parents really let us listen to all of this?!
Billie Piper – "Something Deep Inside" (2000)
Our favorite line: “Your love will be my guide / I've never been this satisfied”
Before switching her focus from singing to acting, Billie Piper was hailed as “British Britney” with an array of bubblegum bops. One of her most remarkable hits had an enlivening title, “Something Deep Inside.”
While Britney was yet to proclaim she was no longer a girl but not yet a woman, Billie decided to give this sex thing a go and liked it “too much”: “The third time was just as sweet, boy you make my life complete.” No wonder Piper eventually agreed to become TV’s most famous escort in the Secret Diary of a Call Girl series.
Aqua – "Barbie Girl" (1997)
Our favorite line: “You can touch, you can play, if you say, 'I'm always yours'"
On the first listen, this feel-good, care-free bubblegum banger from Danish band Aqua seemed like something recorded exclusively for the kindergarten playground. But there’s a reason why Barbie's mother company Mattel was furious enough to sue the band for defamation of (plastic) character.
Aqua’s lawyers were quick to counter-sue and eventually Mattel used the song with fixed lyrics in their ads. But let’s be real for a second: the song is obviously about sex role playing, no matter how vague the lyrics are. Why doesn’t Beyonce record a sexed-up version of this tune for the next 50 Shades of Grey trailer? It’s as submissive as it gets: “You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere, imagination, life is your creation.”
