The announcement capped off the best awards acceptance speech of all time.

Kanye West says that he is running for president in 2020. Yes, you read that right.

He announced this during the MTV VMAs, after Taylor Swift presented him with the highest honor, the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. "And yes, as you probably could’ve guessed in this moment, I’ve decided in 2020 to run for president,” he said as he hopped off stage. Thing is, no one could have possibly guessed that—not after Kanye spent ten minutes talking about past award show moments, from when he interrupted Taylor at the 2009 VMAs to when he saw Justin Timberlake cry for losing at the Grammys ("And I was thinking he deserved Album of the Year"). All of this was said to discuss how his career changed from "I'ma let you finish" onward, like when he chats up someone at the grocery store and that person goes, "Oh, you're not that bad after all!"

Then VMAs host Miley Cyrus joked that she was voting for Donald Trump this election (which she still can do?)—what felt like a rude awakening after one of the best speeches Kanye has done, ever. (It's tough to even call this an "acceptance" speech since he barely acknowledged the award to start.) Watch Kanye announce that he's running for president below, then see his entire VMAs speech at MTV.
