All-female trio from Copenhagen does heroin rock better than anyone

Copenhagen’s Baby In Vain have a badass sound— a sludgy, slow-grinding heroin rock—that’s atypical of a female trio. But Benedicte Pierleoni, Lola Hammerich and Andrea Thuesen (whose average age of 20 can’t even buy them alcohol in the United States) didn't consciously decide to be an all-girl band. “We could have added boys to our group. It wasn’t something we were looking to be,” Hammerich said.

And they’ve been perfecting their sturm und drang for years now, having shared stages with Ty Segall Thurston Moore, and—at their most recent, just-wrapped US tour—the Kills.

Their intense live performances and irresistible dual vocals from Hammerich and Thuesen make for a killer show, and have netted comparisons to Black Sabbath, the Melvins and Alice in Chains. The trio talk about how they started, and their graduation to the “next level shit [that] we’re in now!” and naming their upcoming debut in honor of Guns 'N' Roses.

Hometown and homebase: Copenhagen Denmark

How did you all meet?

We met playing mini golf.

[Editor’s note: Other sources say they met at music school, through mutual friends, and via playing basketball, so who really knows?]

How did mini golf turn into becoming bandmates?

We were all terrible at playing mini golf, so we decided to do something different. Playing music seemed easier.

Who are your biggest influences?

We are not influenced by one act in particular, we use everything we hear see and feel to create our songs and sound.

Was there some kind of epiphany when you realized you were meant to be playing music together?

There probably wasn’t one moment, but once having entered the stage, you have a hard time leaving it again.

Why did you name yourselves Baby in Vain?

It just has a good ring to it!

How would you describe your music to someone who's never heard of you?

Guitar, guitar, drums. And vocals. Rock!

What are your day jobs?

Andrea works for Amnesty International, Lola and Bene go to school.

Do they help you make music for the band?

No, none of it has to do with our music.

What's the craziest thing a fan has ever done for you?

A fan offered us $500 for a towel one of us used during a show.

Your debut album is set to come out soon. What are you calling it?

The album is yet to be named, but we are considering calling it Use Your Illusion lll, The Spaghetti Accident or Try’n Touch It.

 What’s it about?

The theme we are working on is general depravity.
