The Spanish purveyor of big room house talks about EDM’s evolution and drops Beatport fave.

Abel Ramos discovered house music as a ‘90s teenager, and has since created his signature sound with massive bass and bulky beats. This big room house, laced with groovy beats and dirty electro, enhanced by Ramos’ deft handling of the decks, has become a staple at main stages in festivals around the world. He’s performed at London’s Ministry of Sound, Space Miami, Stereo Montreal, Glow Washington and Privilege in Buenos Aires, and he’s also created official remixes for David Guetta, Fatboy Slim, Mariah Carey and Rihanna. Currently, his latest release “Get Back,” featuring Chris Reeder, is climbing the Beatport charts. Ramos talks to MySpace about his summer plans (lots of shows), what he does for fun (“I love sports with risk — my favourite sport is downhill mountain biking!”), his radio show, “With Love Music” and how the EDM scene has changed since the 1990s.

Hometown and current residence: Spain’s capital, Madrid

When did you realize you wanted to DJ?

Short after I first had contact with house music [as a teenager in the 1990s] and it was by chance, they offered me to play music in a small club from my city. It was there where I realised that this was my career.

Did you ever play other instruments before producing?

No, I never played any instruments before, but I’d love to learn how to play piano.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard you before?

A touch of house, very energetic and always thought for the dancefloor.

What do you like better, DJing or producing?

Always DJing. I like to produce a lot but you never feel the same as when you are Djing. I was born a DJ and I’ll die a DJ.

What artist would you love to collaborate with? Whose songs do you love to remix?

I would love to be able to collaborate with Axwell in an original record and remix any track from Tenaglia. I would love to be able to take their production groove to my terrain!

Who is your biggest musical inspiration?

In my beginning Fast Eddie was very present in my life. There is also a Dutch producer, Randy Katana, whose groove and sounds I love.

The “With Love Music” is a radio show that showcases your favorite mixes of the week. Why’d you decide to start it?

Really it is a way of being in constant contact with the whole world and not only when you go to  play in a specific city. Now with the new technologies they can listen to your music anywhere they are—this I think is important that people don’t just consume dance music in the clubs.

What events are you most looking forward to this summer?

This summer I will be playing at Tomorrowland in Belgium, I am especially excited about this. Every Monday in July and August I will have a residency at Opium Barcelona, without doubt the best club in Spain playing for a worldwide crowd.

Apart from this I have some other dates around Europe and possibly by the end of the summer I´ll be in Latin America.

What's your favorite city in the world to play in?

I love to play in Miami especially at the Winter Music Conference, during which period amazing parties are organised with a massive energy. On top of it, it is a great chance to see friends who  you normally only get to talk to through email or skype. I have had the chance to play at Space, Mansion, Set and some others from which I carry a great memory from.

What about your least favorite city to play in?

There is no place where I don’t like to play at! It is true that the crowd is different depending on the city and you fit better with some crowds than with others, but even from the places where you don’t have the feeling you fit in 100 percent,, you always get positive things out of it.

You’ve been performing since before EDM exploded around the world. How has the EDM scene and the music changed for you throughout the years?

My career has passed through various phases. I began with acid house and house, in the ‘90s it was all about trance and then I went back to house again. Even with these changes, my vision is always the same: I need music for the dancefloor and with lots of energy.
