Culling influences from anime, video games, the Ramones and Queens of the Stone Age, this trio from Missouri are playing the best punk rock at the moment.
Like any average American boys, Missouri brothers Dee (20, vocals and guitar), Isaiah (18, bass), and Solomon Radke (16, drums) like video games, movies, comic books, anime and music. Unlike your average American boys, Radkey produces some of the most exciting punk-rock of this generation. Isaiah says they were drawn to punk-rock because of the attitude. (“The bands that did it right were really incredible.”) and that makes sense. Radkey kind of sounds like the band that would be produced by a massive orgy between the Ramones, the Misfits and Glenn Danzig. Maybe it’s not the kind of music you’d expect to hear from a flyover state, but at the same time, Radkey isn’t the kind of band you’d expect to see from Kansas, either. (And unlike the Ramones, they’re actual blood brothers.) Now playing at Coachella, Isaiah talks to MySpace about their growing up years and why he and his brothers decided to form a band.
Hometown: We grew up in St. Joseph Missouri.
Current residence: We are now happily living in Kansas City, KS.
Why did you and your brothers decide to form a band?
Dee got an offer to fill in on bass for this cover band. He borrowed my bass (I didn't even play at the time). And after the show went well I was like, "Let's start a band," because I wanted to use my bass.
Missouri isn't exactly known for punk rock; how did living there help you create music?
Maybe it was the boredom? Couldn't really say. But, lets go with boredom.
What are the pros and cons of being in a band with your brothers? Do you guys have a leader?
No cons. It’s smooth sailing pretty much everyday. We (only) fight about stupid stuff mostly. We all contribute equally to everything, so we don't really have a leader.
What music did you all grow up listening to?
Stuff like Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Weezer, Foo Fighters, Steely Dan, Ramones … We were home-schooled so that's how we got into most of the music that influences us.
What are your influences now?
We pretty much do our own thing regardless of the influence. Weird stuff like Queens of the Stone Age, Fishbone, Steely Dan, Gorillaz and some other groovy stuff has been spinning a lot as of late.
You’ve said you were hardcore into video games, movies, comic books and anime. Why is your EP called Devil Fruit?
There's this amazing anime called "One Piece", and devil fruit is what you eat to get superpowers in that show. It’s mad rare though. SO hard to find a Devil Fruit.
What did you feel when you found out you were playing Coachella?
It was pretty insane. We had no idea that we were even up for that kind of thing. It's always been a dream to hit the major U.S. festivals.
What's the craziest thing a fan has ever done for you?
I once got carried out into the street in Manchester after a show.
You’ve been touring all over Europe and the U.S. this year. What’s the best show you've ever played in your life?
It was at The Black Heart in London; it was sold out and got really insane. I was really sick, so I couldn't sing along at all. But the entire audience sang along with us and that really cheered me up. One of the best nights ever.
