The Providence Black Repertory Company was incubated in the early 90s as a pilot grassroots Public Program called "Xxodus featuring Miss Fannie's Soul Food Kitchen" at AS220 (an established neighboring arts center). Along with a second program called "Round Midnight: A Rapper's Delight," these two performance workshop venues successfully cultivated a solid foundation where local, aspiring artists can practice and perform their craft while attracting hundreds of community supporters from their neighborhoods and beyond.
Public Programs at the Black Rep are at the heart of the theater's multidisciplinary artistic vision. Not only do they serve as the founding, or grassroots, programs that incubated what is now The Providence Black Repertory Company, but they are also integral to the theater-based school curricula and public humanities programs that the Company has developed since 1996, and are designed to teach an appreciation and respect for the performing arts. Xxodus Café's multi-media approach, interdisciplinary format, and wide artistic spectrum attract youth, entire families, community organizations, visiting scholars and playwrites, professional and local musicians, emerging performing artists, and jazz enthusiasts.
