The Waking Eyes are Rusty Matyas, Joey Penner, Matt Peters and Steve Senkiw. The group formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 2001 as more of a musical collective and recording project than a band proper. From the beginning they have refused to be one-dimensional and predictable, with the only constant in their sound coming from their distinct songwriting style. Their debut album Combing The Clouds is a rich tapestry of neo-psychedelic and orchestral pop recorded in various basements, garages and bedrooms in Manitoba. It was released to critical acclaim on Endearing Records in 2002. Soon after they signed with Coalition Records and recorded the rock album, Video Sound, in Toronto. After extensive touring over the next couple of years and finally solidifying their membership, The Waking Eyes went home to work on something new. From the fall of 2005 until the summer of 2007 they wrote and recorded far too many songs to count. After the dust had settled they were left with a 3-CD set of B-sides and rarities (Operation Walter Prychodko), two side projects (Rusty’s Terrier and Matt’s Royal Canoe) and the real prize - a full length album called Holding On To Whatever It Is. The album was recorded and co-produced by John Paul Peters in Winnipeg and will surely be something completely unexpected. The group is currently preparing for the release of this new record in the coming summer.
Matt and Rusty contribute their voices and accompany them with melodies and chords played on guitars and keyboards. Steve counts from 1 to 4, sometimes to 6, and hits things precisely with sticks and feet. Joey makes his bass sound like a soul singer. Previous members include Myron Schulz and Russ Doerksen

jeeze, my mom tried to make my evening better by taking me to see the dark knight.. but the three theaters we went to were ALL SOLD OUT! so we ended up driving around, wasting gas, and then went to her friends house where i played guitar hero for 5 hours with some kids. and watching ridiculous videos on youtube.
and that thing on my hand was supposed to just be a smiley face, which evolved into a man, and the man ended up yelling, but then it looked like a beaver so my friend turned it into a beaver man. the ugliest thing i have ever seen in my life, and it was permanently a part of my body.. okay, well it finally washed off 5 days later. my friends fail at art.
okay apparently i'm not going now. i haven't found anyone to come with me or anything.. so i think you should just pick me up on your way there.. i'll wait on st mary's. :) haha.
that sounds like fun. i kinda wish i wasn't at the forks for the fireworks, it was really crowded as usual. and it was horrible trying to leave afterwards. whatever though!
i'm trying to find someone to come with me on friday! i really want to go, and it's not even far from my house either. and if i miss the trews again i might cry a little.
Summer's going beautifully. I just poisoned the weeds on my lawn today. I'm not big into using pesticide, but I'm not really big into having my yard make my home look like a crack house either. Went to Folk Fest for the first time on Friday. Good music. Bad fashion. Going to see Quinzy play on Wednesday. They're my old co-workers. And I got interested in your band because Mr. Schulz teaches at my kids' school. Damn, Winnipeg's small! Hope your summer is going beautifully!!!!!!
i finally got the chance to listen to the new album from start to finish and it's brilliant! i love the synth sounds u guys incorporated in some of the tracks. cheers on a great album =D
