| About The Tinder Box |
|
The Tinder Box is an art "collective" with no collective organization, a music venue, and a lot of weirdos smoking cigarettes on some front steps in Brattleboro, VT. Located on the third floor of 17 Elliot Street, it might be best described as a space for things to breathe--things that are too often suffocated and pushed out of a world geared towards money and the people who have it. We are motivated by a desire to create a place where rock shows, dance parties, and creation can exist for their own sakes.
A large ballroom functions as an outlet for all kinds of public events, from bands to film screenings. Members of the community interested in arranging an event of any kind in the ballroom are invited to e-mail us at tinderfriends@hotmail.com or simply come by and visit during a show. We hope to host all kinds of music and events in this space, so don't worry if the event doesn't seem to "fit" with other shows we have listed.
Besides the ballroom, the floor is divided up and rented as private studio space to smaller groupings of artists. Although at work autonomously on their own projects, everyone involved in renting space at the Tinder Box is part of a broader dynamic of reinforcing general creativity, both within our circle of friends and within the broader community.
Events are pay-by-donation and not for profit. Money collected at events go to the musicians that play and paying as many of the bills as we can manage. The rest of the costs associated with running the space are paid for out-of-pocket by a dedicated group of individuals that volunteer their own time and resources to keeping the project going.
A WORD ABOUT BOOKING "PROCEDURES": There are no booking procedures. We are not a collective. We are a collection of individuals who set up shows for bands we are excited about. Most people who send us a MySpace message won't end up with a show (especially if they are a "melodic hard rock" band or play lounge music for hipsters). The best way to get a show at the Tinder Box is to get somebody involved with it to like your band enough to set up/promote/run your show for free.
This isn't meant to discourage anybody from asking us to check out your tunes, because we want to be exposed to new music, but don't be surprised if you don't hear back. Thanks and love... The Tinder Box
