Band MembersPlease note that more than one band member maintains this site - personal messages to one of us are a bad idea unless you want the others to read them...
InfluencesInfluences are somewhat misleading, as we try not to emulate anyone in particular, but the band members definitely share some tastes and this is no doubt reflected in our music.

We have at various times been inspired by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks (together and separately), Jandek, Carl Stalling, Curt Boettcher, Neil Innes, The Negro Problem, Jake Thackray, Half Man Half Biscuit, Corn Mo, Joe Meek, The Monkees, Mike Nesmith, The Electric Prunes, Yip Harburg, W.S. Gilbert, They Might Be Giants, Love, Stew, Squeeze, Big Star, The Beach Boys, Roy Wood, The Thamesmen, Frank Zappa, The Wondermints, The Polyphonic Spree, Plouf!, The Beatles, Louis Jordan, Viv Stanshall, Captain Beefheart, XTC, Ian Dury, Louis Armstrong, Mo Tucker, Charles Ives, Candypants and Hasil Adkins.

Then there's the friends of The National Pep - bands like The Psychotic Reaction, Blake Jones & The Trike Shop, Wilful Missing and others who have contributed musically and otherwise to our work.

But equally, we have been inspired by our non-musical influences: The Marx Brothers, DC Comics, Alan Moore, Abraham Lincoln, Lon Chaney (Senior), Alan Hale (Junior), old Warner Bros cartoons, The Goons, P G Wodehouse, Molesworth, Nero Wolfe, Louise Brooks, Mel Brooks, Do Not Adjust Your Set, Alastair Sim, E F Benson, Chespirito, Ripping Yarns, Doctor Who, Cerebus, Laurel & Hardy

If that kind of thing is your kind of thing, then we're probably not, but we're a bit like your kind of thing sometimes.

Sounds LikeThe best way to tell what we sound like, of course, is to listen. Failing that, imagine 1920s Britain and 1950s America colliding over a synth bass-line, with exuberant pop melodies and cryptic references backed by vibraphone and organ. If Syd Barret was in Queen, if Smiley Smile rather than Pepper had revolutionised music, if Ogden Nash had written lyrics for the Lovin' Spoonful, they wouldn't have made music that sounds very like the National Pep.

   About The National Pep
You haven't realized it yet, but you want cryptic lyrics, synth bass squelches and the ragged effervescence of musicians who are looking for a new musical recipe, rather than the perfect pastiche of their heroes. When you finally realize what you want, The National Pep is here for you.

We have uploaded four MP3s for your delectation and delight. These are from our two EPs - Citizen Gomez and Love Punks Want To Make You Cry - both available from CDBaby

From Love Punks, Jaded is what happens when you try to fit an album into three minutes.

From Citizen Gomez, Think Carefully For Victory is currently on its third set of lyrics, after previous lives as a song about the possibility of the end of world and a meditation on how far one should go in a war against a enemy who will stop at nothing. The current lyrics have been descirbed as "The National Pep's tips for success".

Wishing Well is one of Olsen's. This one is a psychedelicate waltz.

London After Midnight isn't about London and was declared by the lyricist to contain "more nonsense than any other National Pep number". Not that there's anything wrong with nonsense.

One aspect that's always been captivating with National Pep
is their graphic work. I've enjoyed
every cartoon/photo/drawing I've seen.
This latest slightly melancholy icon...the candles.---wasn't there a famous Beatlebootleg at one point..?
yours in pop minutia,
B.

LITTLE STEVEN VAN ZANDT (of The Sopranos and Springsteen fame) and THE UNDERGROUND GARAGE say: "THE MOCKERS have one of the COOLEST SONGS IN THE WORLD!"

"Illinois" is lovely, but everything's so much more out of sync in the states than you could possibly imagine...hadn't been by for a while and wanted to say cheers. The way things are going I might move to the UK before too long!

Thanks for the lovely comment! Enjoying your music too - it feels like a delightfully bizarre combination of the wistful evocative beauty of Sandy Denny married to a carny who used to roadie for Bonzo Dog!
