Soulshot has been around the Southern New England reggae scene for about three years but already has some impressive entries in its gig log. The band often appears with Don Minott, noted Jamaican vocalist and songwriter; regularly opens for The Skatalites when they appear in the area, and recently backed up Alton Ellis and Ernie Smith, two luminaries from reggae's early years, at the Rhode Island Reggae Festival. Soulshot is a nine piece horn-based band playing classic Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae. It's nine members based in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, are strands in a web that cradles many of the noted reggae bands in the Southern New England area dating back nearly 25 years. The long list includes: Maasai, Dub Squad, Wilson Blue and the Blue Roots, Zion Wave, Man on the Street, Space Mon Rah, The Agents, Pressure Cooker as well as several others. Trumpet player, Mark Berney spent three years with the Skatalites and recorded original material on two of their cds.
The Soulshot horn section is Mark Berney, trumpet; Grayson Farmer, trumpet; and Frank Moniz, tenor saxaphone. Accomplished jazz soloists, all have a deep respect for the rich tradition and varied styles of Caribbean horns. The five man rhythm section features Carey, drums; Cameron Greenlee, keyboards; Paul Falcone, percussion; Gregory Rourke, guitar; and Dave Turano on bass allowing the band to regularly double the bass and rhythm lines for a mighty effect. Cameron and Gregory also supply the funky bits and solos. The band covers the catalog of rhythms from the classic era of reggae to the present. Though "the boys in the band do sing" with Grayson and Paul taking the lead, Soulshot is ready to take on any vocalist on tour needing a dreadful backup unit with a crucial horn section.
