Mission Statement:
Using music as its weapon, the Richmond Afrobeat Movement carries the torch of the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Combining funk, latin, soul, jazz, high-life, and traditional African music with political and social awareness, the R.A.M. preaches for revolution through its music. With sometimes as many as 15 members on stage, they create an undulating groove, which carries an unstoppable horn section. The term “movement” applies in many ways: to the non-stop energy created physically, sonically, and visually, a group of people working together to advance their shared political, social, and artistic ideas, the principal division of a longer musical work, self sufficient in terms of key, tempo, and structure, and is also refers to the moving parts of a mechanism. Be that as it may, the R.A.M. is committed to putting on the best possible performance it can to as broad of an audience as it can.
"Yes, there’s strength in numbers, as is proven by the newborn Richmond Afrobeat Movement, which somehow packs about a dozen musicians onto the stage at Bogart’s Back Room for a Wednesday-night residency. They huddle together and protect themselves on that march to the sea with flailing trombones, Latin percussion and political commentary. And we hope they make it, they and all the rest, because if not, the beach will be a lonely place." -Style Weekly, February 14, 2007.
Hey everyone. the word BROWN wants to thank all of our new friends. We don't make a habit of sending out mass comments but we just want to welcome all the newcomers. Our debut album is being mastered as we speak and will be released this summer. Thanks again. Nate
fucking wicked show at the icf. i was all lazy and late for the 1 o clock supposed start time but i got there for sound check and had to stay the whole time. first of all, the swaying made the show. that shit was fun. second, lucas fritz is the baddest mother fucker i ever head blow through a trumpet mouth piece. so fast and nasty dude. 3rd. that chick with the coronet or something (please dont take my ignorance as insult) was wailing also. mind blowing. 4th-sh that dude w/ the saxophone was laying down the funkiest fucking licks i've ever heard through brass. lead singer was right on (i dig the dreads too), fuck the man. guitar was banging, keyboards were unnnnnnnnnrealllll, that was beautiful when he let it go. and the fucking cinderella story of it all was that fuckin' trumbone that busted out at the end. that was so rediculous. i've never heard a trombone blow close to the shit he was dropping. percussion was fuckin' wicked, it was all awesome. good luck, (drunkass) Tim Beavers.
