STABLES: Fox News, Radio Talkers, CableTV Hosts, Authors SPECIAL MOVE: The Factor CATCHPHRASES: "You're about to enter the No-Spin zone" and "we're looking out for you" FEUDS: Al Franken, Keith Olbermann NICKNAME: Culture Warrior
Bill O’Reilly is one of the few triple threats in the APF. His television show 'The O’Reilly Factor' on Fox News routinely outrates its competitors. To this date Bill is the only APF pundit representing the ‘Independents’ (he considers himself a ‘Traditionalist’), having registered no party affiliation in 2001. Bill represents the everyman, a working class guy standing up for the little guy. He has championed many causes on his show pushing for harsher penalties on convicted child molesters, as well as bringing attention to the War on Christmas. He has also mobilized his viewers to a boycott of subjects as varied as Pepsi, France and Canada.
Bill’s outspoken, short tempered style often pits him against other pundits and organizations. He will often accuse people he disagrees with as being ‘Anti-Bush’ and ‘rooting for America to lose’. A fan of pejoratives, Bill also likes to paint opponents as being ‘secular left’, ‘smear-merchants’ and having ‘San Francisco values’.
Bill has many rivalries with APF pundits, more often than not they are heated. The most personal being with Al Franken and Keith Olbermann, who constantly bait and provoke him. APF pundit Stephen Colbert has also used Bill as a blueprint for his satirical show mirroring O’Reilly’s bloviating flourishes and show format.
What is Pundit Fight all about?
I often get emails asking me what American Pundit Fighting is all about. "I like the characters? Are they suppose to fight? Is this a game?" I suspect most of the confusion comes from the MySpace Page. For the benefit of everyone involved here is a quick rundown.
What is the site about?
The site is about Politics and Punditry. People sometimes characterise partisan politics as a 'horse race', I've always found that comparison one-dimensional. I see it more as a popularity contest, where intangibles like charisma, and aura come into play. I use wrestling as an analogy to illustrate this.
Click here for a quick rundown of the site
Who is the site for?
The site is for everybody! You don't have to know anything about politics. You don't have to know anything about wrestling. A passing knowledge of both might make it more accessible but its not necessary. I don't assume any foreknowledge on the part of the reader so I make a point of providing links, resources and video whenever possible. If my mum can make sense of it, this site has done its job.
What's with the characters and animations?
I'm a graphic designer by day. The site for all intents and purpose could survive without the characters or animations. However as I'm equipped to and enjoy making graphics I use them in place of stock images. The Myspace page is a rarely updated resource page that shows off all the pundits that I may speak of on the Pundit Fight blog, and houses most of the art.
The APF is a way of showcasing my writing as well as my illustration and animation skills. I would love for the characters to be used for the purposes of a game and one day I hope to make an animation of the characters wrestling each other. But at this stage they are peripheral goals, the bread and butter of the site is the writing.

Where should I start?
I touch on issues of presentation in politics and punditry. Because the themes I discuss are generic and universal, they are not tethered to a time or event. The columns I write should remain relevant no matter how far removed they are from the time I write it to when you read it. I would encourage you to read through the archives. You can begin with some of my favourite posts here:
Persona or Orientation
Is he a 'heel' or 'face'. A heel is a villain, someone you love to hate. A face is a heroic figure, someone you look up to and root for to win. Whilst a pundit's orientation is determined by the audience, it is actually manufactured by the pundit's chosen persona and delivery style. Ann Coulter is a good example of someone hated by the pundit's own design.
Special moves What specialty manoeuvre would the pundit use. Always has a fitting catchy name, often derived from a pundit's favorite catch phrase.
Pop rating A 'pop' is the amount of love a pundit gets. The gushing praise and cheer that greets their entrance. This is the amount of positive blog postings and exposure the pundit would get from the blogosphere. It might be the ratings hike that occurs when they make a radio or TV appearance.
Heat rating How much animosity is directed towards the pundit. Does they get much negative exposure on the blogosphere. Do they receive a lot of hate mail? Are they dissed by other pundits.
Charm rating How charming is the pundit?
Remember whilst a 'pop' is positive, it is not necessarily just reserved for 'faces'. Nor is 'heat' simply reserved for 'heels'. Take Rush Limbaugh as an example, Rush is adored by millions of conservatives and he is widely considered the most influential pundit of all time. But consider that he is also passionately demonised and despised by the left. His ability to engender such hatred with one community whilst being revered by another makes him a successful pundit. He is talked about and he is listened to. He is known. Charm plays a big factor in this.
A letter from the Commisioner
The beauty of wrestling is that it doesn’t discriminate. Though it helps to have actual wrestling ability its more important to engage the audience and appeal to them on a personal level.
Success in wrestling is not measured by how much the audience loves you or hates you, its how much they care. If the crowd cheers for you then you are a crowd favorite, if they boo you it means you make a compelling villain. If the crowd are apathetic they’ll chant ‘booooring, boooring”, you won’t sell merchandise, you’ll be relegated to the bottom of the card and possibly out of a job.
In the world of punditry , its great if the audience agrees with you and they see a champion of their ideals. But often controversy can be just as compelling. The advantages of getting a reaction for or against you is negligible, any reaction at all is favorable to your career. It means people pay attention when you speak, it shows that you’re relevant, it guarantees that you’ll be discussed in the blogosphere, the nightly news and on the radio.
It all comes down to your ‘draw’, that’s why wrestlers pushing 60 who are no longer as effective in the ring (if they ever were) can still command centre stage. Its why pundits regardless of how many times they’ve been proven wrong or the amount of people they’ve offended will still get return invites to the talk shows.
The pundits of APF hopefully represent a segment in part or in whole of the different opinions out there in society. Using a lighthearted analogy the APF hopes to encourage people to seek and listen to different opinions and opinionmakers. If the APF can help to instill a spirit of curiosity and investigation it would be a bonus, ultimately though I hope you find it entertaining and ideally get behind the community.

Tucker Carlson is a conservative pundit who headlines national news show Tucker on MSNBC. Previously Tucker was co-host of CNN's Crossfire, representing the political right (teamed with Paul Begala for the left). The show’s combative format was famously criticised by Jon Stewart for hurting the public discourse.
On his current show, Tucker will often invite Air America Radio hosts Sam Seder and Rachel Maddow as well as TV host Bill Maher to debate the issues of current events.

Ann Coulter is an unabashed right-wing partisan who seems to cause controvery wherever she speaks, be it print or TV. It is this fact that makes her attractive for many of those in commercial media making frequent TV appearances on The Today Show, Hannity and Colmes, The O'Reilly Factor, and Real Time. She has written 5 books, been featured in many national newspapers and has graced the cover of 'Time Magazine'.
Because of her bombastic style, many other commentators will undoubtedly have an opinion of her. Al Franken has been invited to events with Ann to debate and often talks about it. On another note Janeane Garofalo is convinced Ann Coulter is an Andy Kaufman-esque performance artist and comedian.

Stephen Colbert is a partisan right-wing pundit only in so far as he employs the same signature moves, truth is he's doing it for laughs. Stephen is the star of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, a Daily Show spin-off that parodies the bluster of personality driven cable news shows.
An obvious inspiration for the show is Bill O'Reilly who Colbert affectionately calls "Papa Bear". O'Reilly in turn considers the Colbert character a compliment, appreciating Stephen for not being mean-spirited. Stephen Colbert has featured many high profile guests spanning the political spectrum including APF Pundits Hugh Hewitt and Joe Scarborough.

Of all the APF pundits, Sean Hannity is the most bankable triple threat. Overpowering his duo on the Hannity and (Alan) Colmes Show, author of two books and nationally syndicated radio talk show host on the WABC.
Hannity is one to polarize issues which means you either love him or hate him. He has a dependable Tag Team partner in Mark Levin who he gushingly refers to as “The Great One”, also a radio talk host on WABC. They will often appear on each other’s shows and gang up on leftists. Hannity has been in a few heated exchanges with the likes Janeane Garofalo and Al Franken.

Laura Ingraham is a conservative radio personality and has one of the leading listernerships amongst the nationally aired programs. Visiting Iraq for 6 days in early 2006, Laura was very critical of the mainstream media upon returning home. She calls for the media to report the positive things “instead of reporting from hotel balconies about the latest IEDs going off”.
She has written a book “Shut Up & Sing” critiquing liberals who bad mouth America, the book’s title is a popular retort to sermonizing celebrities like the ‘Dixie Chicks’. In response Janeane Garofalo has said “She doesn’t mean for Nashville right-wingers. … her husband, the football player, or Ron Silver who spoke at the RNC. She just means “shut up and sing if I don’t agree with you”. Laura Ingraham’s wrestling manager (producer) has been in a feud with Al Franken.

Mark Levin originally started off as an advisor to members of Ronald Reagan's Cabinet. Practising law in the private sector, he got his start on the radio by providing legal opinion on the Rush Limbaugh Show. He soon had his own show on WABC following his good friend Sean Hannity, frequently guesting on each other’s show. Mark uses his bully pulpit on his show to the delight of his fans, often shouting down liberal callers and guests, cutting them off and hurling insults.
He has coined nicknames for many pundits including: Keith Olbermann (Countdown to No Ratings, with Keith Overbite), Al Franken (Froggie) as well conservative Michael Savage (Weiner Nation)

On any list of the most influential Opinion Makers in America, you will find Rush on the top of it. He is the undisputed champion. Reportedly earning up to $30 million a year and attracting a national audience of around 13.5 million, Rush is credited with the transformation of AM radio and political talk. His influence is such, that high ranking Republican officials will often appear on his show to get their message across. Of all the Opinionmakers Rush is the only capable of singlehandedly swaying an election.
Being the top superstar means having the largest target on your back, his daily comments and actions will sometimes get national play. Rush's influence is so great and his commentary so consequential other pundits will often deconstruct it and when possible, demonize it.

There is no APF pundit more adept at the New Media landscape than Michelle Malkin. Administrating her popular blog as well as launching a news video web channel 'HotAir'. Malkin has gained popularity for her investigative work on the mainstream press and their coverage of current events. Her other pet topic is immigration, speaking from the viewpoint of an Asian American she is often derided as a ‘Sell Out’.
Being such a prominent blogger, Michelle is not afraid to take on liberal commentators and express how she feels about them. She has commented on the likes of Randi Rhodes and Al Franken. Janeane Garofalo has been known to call Malkin beautiful but ugly on the inside.

Joe Scarborough is a proud conservative who has been critical of the misdeeds by republicans. He has recently been engaged in a feud with MSNBC critic Bill O’Reilly, charging that Bill has been a ‘suck up’ to the GOP. Joe has also dueled with many APF pundits from the left including Bill Maher, Janeane Garofalo and Sam Seder.

Who I'd like to meet:
AL FRANKEN
TYPE: Face
STABLES: Air America SPECIAL MOVE: The Truth FEUDS:Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter
Like most of the Pundits on the blue side Al Franken originally began as an entertainer. An SNL alumni, Franken now makes his name in the world of politics having written multiple books and in his own right become a serious player in the democratic movement. In January 2004, Al Franken entered the world of political talk headlining the flagship program on the fledgling Air America Radio. Currently there is a lot of speculation on whether Al will run for political office in his hometown of Minnesotta.
Franken famously feuded with Bill O’Reilly, usually the instigator by baiting him pointing out his misinformation. One of the more infamous exchanges happened during a Book Expo televised on C-SPAN2, this episode highlights arguably the most heated of all the rivalries in the APF.
TYPE: Heel
STABLES: Air America SPECIAL MOVE: Peach Driver FEUDS:Sean Hannity, Michelle Malkin
Janeane Garofalo is a stand-up comedian, actress and outspoken liberal. Her prominence in politics came as a result of being an activist on behalf of the Anti-war movement to what inevitably became the Iraq war in 2003. Explaining why she did so in an interview with AlterNet, “I'm so public about this because I've been asked to do so and because I painfully felt that the anti-war movement was being ignored. …If I thought the anti-war movement was getting proper coverage in the mainstream media, I would have said no. You don't need actors to make this a mockery.
During her many appearances representing the Anti War view, there were often combative exchanges from interviewers contemptuous of her as a ‘celebrity activist’. Never one to back down she always handled it with her straight shooting style. She would later tag team and introduce the world to fellow APF pundit Sam Seder on their radio show- The Majority Report. Nightly she would talk extemporaneously and psychoanalyze her fellow pundits. She would later dissolve her Radio tag team partnership with Sam after 2 years together.

Rachel Maddow is a radio host on the liberal station, Air America Radio. Openly gay and a Rhodes scholar, her cheeky and articulate delivery is making her a rising star for the APF left. A hard worker known to prep her 2 hour show for 5 hours, her pet topics include gay and lesbian issues as well examining political tactics at play.
Rachel was regularly guest on Tucker, sparring with host Tucker Carlson on current political events. She was once mentioned by Rush Limbaugh on his show “Has anybody ever heard of Rachel Maddow?’ to this day she uses it a badge of honor employing it as a bumper for her show. Rachel has challenged the self-presentation of her conservative APF pundits, Michelle Malkin, Laura Ingraham and Ann Coulter.

Maher is a comedian most known for his political satire, hosting Politically Incorrect for Comedy Central and currently Real Time with Bill Maher for HBO. Often controversial, his political highwire act often gets him into trouble especially when commenting on Religion and terrorism.
Surprisingly Bill Maher is a close personal friend of opposition APF pundit Ann Coulter, much to the chagrin Blue team supporters. Of all the APF pundits, Bill is undoubtedly the most game. Not afraid to engage in heavyweight debates on hostile territory, appearing on the shows of Tucker Carlson, Joe Scarborough and Bill O’Reilly.
KEITH OLBERMANN
TYPE: Heel
STABLES: MSNBC, TV, Authors SPECIAL MOVE: The Countdown FEUDS:Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter
Keith Olbermann is the host of Countdown on MSNBC, an admirer of Edward R Murrow the show is known for its extended monologues often addressed directly to his targets. Keith is unapologetically liberal, he has been one of the more candid critics of the Bush Administration and its cheerleaders. Keith employs a sneering approach to his commentary, his signature segment ‘Worst Person in the World” singles out personalities who have said or done stupid and damaging things.
Keith has a recurring array of targets on his show, Bill O’Reilly being the most prominent. He will often provoke Bill by spending long segments commenting on him (incidentally O’Reilly’s show airs the same time). Other usual suspects include: Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter often featuring them in the Worst person in the World list.

Randhi Rhodes is a radio veteran currently hosting her own show on Air America Radio. Formerly serving in the Airforce as an aircraft mechanic, she is passionate, brazen and sometimes controversial. One of the leading voices on Air America, she reaches 1.25 million-plus listeners per week via 73 radio stations She is also carried on XM Satellite Radio.
Randi’s quick wit and relentlessness make her a formidable debate opponent. She participated in a Fatal Four way match on Larry King Live with Fellow liberal Ed Schultz, Hugh Hewitt and Martha Zoller.

Ed Shultz is one of the highest rating blue team pundits. In excess of 2.25 million listeners per week, on over 100 radio stations including the Armed Forces Radio Network. Originally a moderate Republican, Ed describes himself as a “gun-totin’, red meat-eatin’ lefty”. Ed shifted his political leaning more left of center upon meeting his now wife, seeing the plight of the homeless, having trouble making ends meet and those losing their farms.
Ed has been critical of right wing heavyweights such as Rush, Hannity and O’Reilly. Saying of O’Reilly "Bill O'Reilly doesn't care about the little guy. He's on an agenda just like any other right-wing commentator,". He is less delicate with Hannity "My goal is to beat Hannity; I'm going to beat that SOB...He distorts, he lies, he is a fraud."

Sam Seder, although always interested in Politics was a radio novice until he tag-teamed with friend and fellow APF pundit Janeane Garofalo on their show 'The Majority Report’. Sam would later headline his own show ‘The Sam Seder show’ after Janeane's departure. One of the show’s unique features is Sam’s encouraging of his conservative audience to call in. His pet topics include Republican hypocrisy, in particular Anti-gay gays, the media and the Christian Right. All these were featured (often in mocking fashion ) in his book FUBAR: America’s Right Wing Nightmare” co-written with Stephen Sherrill. A former comedian and movie director, Sam’s show has many comic elements including mock guests and entertainers.
Sam Seder has featured on and debated with many APF Pundits including Keith Olbermann, Tucker Carlson and Joe Scarborough. Sam often deconstructs the commentary made by the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh, highlighting the cynicism and lunacy of their statements.

STABLES: Comedy Central, Cable TV, Authors SPECIAL MOVE: The Anchor FEUDS:Bill O'Reilly
Jon Stewart is arguably the most visible and well known of the Blue APF Pundits. Since taking over the hosting duties for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show in early 1999, he has made the show (and himself ) an influential and relevant force in Politics. Although the show is a mock news program, it is considered one of the sharpest as far as highlighting the ‘spin’, hypocrisy and failures in the political and media landscape. Being a comedy program has allowed the show to be more critical and adventurous because it does not have the same expectation of decorum. This has given Stewart a unique and powerful role in the media establishment.
Stewart has gone nose to nose with important political players and APF pundits. Stewart famously helped in the demise of Crossfire (co-hosted by Tucker Carlson) by labeling the show “partisan hackery...hurting America”. Bill O’Reilly has been critical of the Daily Show in dismissing its viewers as uninformed, "many Americans ages 18 to 24 have no idea what's going on, [they] get their news from Jon Stewart and their point of view from bomb-throwing entertainers."
Like most subcultures the APF has its own jargon, an amalgam of elements borrowed from the world of wrestling and politics.
Here are a list of words you’ll find used in the APF. In the future I hope to link to video examples to further illustrate the terms.
-------------------------------------
angle n. The “storyline”. It may happen over one debate or many and the pundits do not necessarily have to meet. Often the escalation of events occur when the pundits are on their respective shows
base n. people who already agree with a pundit. Those who already watch their shows, buy their books and read their blogs. It is important for the pundit to indulge this audience as they are the loyal core of support
blogosphere n. the set of weblogs on the internet, in this case political. They may be written diaries, discussion boards or Video journals
booker n. the party who invites and sets the tone for the debate. This can be cordial late night talk show appearances, or heated interrogations on a radio show
card n. the series of debates appearing on the program at one time
draw v.t.n. the popularity of a pundit. Popularity is judged by the amount of people tuning in to see the pundit speak their mind. This may be the ratings of their respective TV and radio shows, the columns, blogs and books they write. The spike they create in ratings when they appear on other programs. The attention they receive from the news media and the blogosphere
dud n. A particularly bad and totally uninteresting debate
face n. & adj. [babyface] a pundit well loved by his audience, hero-like. This can be achieved by being receptive to the audience, championing popular ideas or opposing a detestable character
fall
feud n. a series of debates between two pundits. It can be a civil encounter, multiple invitations to discuss current events possibly on a contract basis. It can also be heated, the eventual confrontation when two pundits have baited each other and finally meet
gimmick n. a pundit's personality. The behavior and distinguishing traits apparent while performing, this will often dictate whether a pundit is a Face or a Heel
heat n. Enthusiastic negative response. Controversy can often lead to exposure, by negative referencing and discussion on blogs, the news media and radio. The attention may lead to more invitations for TV and radio appearances
heel n. & adj. a pundit who brings attention to themselves by intentionally alienating or discomforting viewers. Someone who generates ‘heat’. They may be offensive generalizations or unpopular truths told without tact
job n. Staging a convincing loss in a debate
jobber n. a weaker pundit brought in to make a debate opponent look comparitively better. It is usually an inexperienced and less charming person
kayfabe n. adj. of or related to inside information about the business, especially by fans. This can be backstory on the debaters’ history, past connections and affiliations
mark n. an audience member who takes everything their favorite pundit says at face value, often regurgitating there talking points. They are usually gullible and uninquisitive, not interested in sourcing different opinions that may discredit said talking points
pop n, v.i. positive enthusiastic response to a pundit. Their debates are recorded and featured on blogs and video sites. Their work referenced positively on radio and TV. Audience frequently complimenting when they call in their radio shows. High volume of readership, listernership and exposure
promo n. an organized discussion or speech used to escalate a storyline or feud. It may involve baiting or impugning another pundit in the hope of a confrontation
pundit n. adj. a person who appears in the media offering opinions, analysis or discourse on a subject. Unlike journalists who are expected to be objective when reporting, pundits can provide context and an ideological perspective to highlight the important aspects of the issue for the public
punditocracy n. a term coined by Nation columnist Eric Alterman. It describes the growing influence of a "tiny group of highly visible political pontificators who make their living offering 'inside political opinions and forecasts' in the elite national media." It refers to the notion that politicans no longer seek the approval of the people as it is being eclipsed by the pundit class who are the noisiest and have the last word. This is considered dangerous by some because pundits are not always representative of the community (they are broad by nature) and are subject to personal ambitions such as advancing their status and influence
screw-job n. adj. a debate or ending which is not clean (definite) due to factors outside the normal course of a debate
shoot n. when a pundit breaks the expected decorum of a debate and becomes unfairly hostile, usually to satisfy their base. It may be pressuring someone to answer a loaded question, bringing up something negative from the interviewee’s past irrelevant to a debate
smark n. a political junkie, someone who follows politics attentively. They will read messageboards, blogs and listen to as much media as possible. The depth of exploration makes them more discerning and skeptical. The opposite of a ‘mark’
spot n. The high-point. An event or sequence of events which makes a particular debate distinctive
squash n. a totally passive job where one pundit completely dominates another. v.t. to win a squash match
stable n. A group of pundits working together for the same cause. An alliance
stiff adj. Not quite a shoot, but almost. It involves someone who doesn’t return the same cordiality to a fellow pundit. A stiff worker will act more serious and aggressive to a pundit who may be being light hearted creating an imbalance in attitude
turn n., v.i. change in orientation from heel to face or vice-versa
work n. a deception or sham, the opposite of a shoot. When a pundit sympathetic to his interviewee creates a false appearance of asking tough questions. Usually when a personality needs to do damage control, an agreeable pundit may get an ‘exclusive’ to interview them
workrate n. how hard the pundit works. How often they venture into varying mediums; writing blogs, appearing in debates and interviews on top of their day-to-day job
