“That weird smell in the air when you somehow get outside in the morning of the harsh sun is baking the night off of the concrete. It makes you feel as if you’ve been missing something, and of course you have. One wonders how many experiences one will miss during their short time on earth just by doing what they would normally do everyday. There is almost always somewhere that you’d rather be, whether you know it or even think it’s possible or not. I think I’ll sleep on the roof tonight. When I was a kid, I would bring my guitar, my radio, and a couple of pillows up there and watch packs of coyotes invade the neighbor’s backyards chasing rabbits. There is always so much more going on, even right next to people, than they would ever know about. How many times have you been able to say to yourself that there was absolutely no place you’d rather be? Have you ever thought that and then something even better happened? How about when something horrible happened and you just wish that you had just waited an extra hour before getting out of bed and everything would have turned out different. There are people for whom denying themselves pleasure makes them feel the most alive. I’m not sure if that would make life more or less difficult. This has nothing at all to with Pinback’s new album, Autumn of the Seraphs.”
- Rob Crow
Around here, we embrace the mystery of life – coyotes and all. So allow us to present this new record from San Diego’s finest, Pinback. Comprised of two core members, the prolific Armistead Burwell Smith IV (Zach) and the inexhaustible Rob Crow, the band began in 1998 when the guys took a break from their various other projects (3 Mile Pilot for Zach and Thingy and Heavy Vegetable for Rob). Autumn of the Seraphs is Pinback’s fourth full-length record, and second on Touch and Go. 2004’s Summer in Abaddon hit the scene like high tide gliding in, whirling around listeners, full of beautiful intensity. It found its place in the hearts of a crazy amount of people worldwide following the success of the single “Fortress,” and rightfully so.
This record, Autumn of the Seraphs, pushes forward and upward. Its melodies are more dynamic and aggressive, while still gently pulling you back in again and again. While entirely recorded in the band’s home studios once again, this record is tighter, the drumming more immediate and crisp. Those duties were shared by Mario Rubalcaba (Rocket from the Crypt) and Chris Prescott (No Knife), and it’s a marked difference from Pinback’s previous releases. “Good to Sea” is the jam of Indian summer. “Walters” saunters its way to a buzzy guitar breakdown while “Subbing for Eden” works steadily toward each climactic chorus. Autumn of the Seraphs is for both rabbits and people, for good days and for ones where you should have stayed in bed. It’s Pinback’s best yet, and it’s going to take you over.
Great show in Boston. I hate the Paradise (the security are ass-faces), but had to show up to see you all play. I know Rob could not get his "bullshit" together; but you all sounded tight and wonderful. Don't be strangers. Cheers, -=J
i gotta say, amazing show at toad's--made for one of the greatest nights i've had, haha. it's one thing to be moved by music, but it's an entirely different thing to see your favorite band live, experience the music right there. rock on :]
great show at Toad's guys, even though it was a really shitty turnout. oh well. You guys made up for it the next night with a better set and a drunker Rob. Sweet!!!
Please don't rush the tempos tonight! Really looking forward to seeing you guys. Seems like everybody wants to run the tunes 20bpm faster than they are on the album.

dear david, it is so true, the vast majority of people in the first world do not see the environment as the most important thing on the agenda. you know as well as i do, most people need selfish motivation. time makes sure, the more people become aware of what must be done, the closer we come to the brick wall that seamed to be a mirage. you said it your self, we can not avoid said brick wall. only try and steer to around it, but we will hit. i dont know what these people in power really want? but, they must know what they are doing. perhaps not, it is easy to believe a lie. regardless, we, the people not in power, must believe in big change for the better and ask good questions in order to find solutions. i was in the states recently and i met some middle upper class people. i spoke to them about alternative energy and they gave me the slide that it is too much money, the return is too long... etc. i said is has nothing to do with the monetary, and everything to do with the environment and what you can do to help as a well off individual. people are brainwashed all the time. who knows how much crap any of us believes? propaganda that promotes selfishness is very popular, simply because people who dont have what you have are so hungry for what you have, they will steel it if you dont give it to them. my point is, we need to make change internally, the better we are at this the more we will be able to make rational decisions over all, and the more positive influence we may spark in others. if that brick wall really is imminent, this may be the best way to avoid it. perhaps i see an escape hatch, and i am calmly pointing to it as i lift the lever and push out the window. this buss is going fast, so if we act like babies and relax we should just bounce right into the sun. beyond the sun is my goal, but to save the planet something i cant help but try. both of these dreams, priceless.
