About me:
Hi, everybody! First, I want to apologize for not keeping up with my messages and blog for a while--I've been busy writing my next book, which is still in progress and might be all summer. I hope to check in more often, but a surer way of reaching me is by direct email at: marlys@marlyspearson.com
Now, the "about me" bit: I write gay historical romance. My first novel, The Price of Temptation(September 2005, Seventh Window Publications) was named a finalist in the Romance category of the Lambda Literary Awards. (Note: clicking on either cover will take you to that book's web site, which includes the first chapter so you can get an idea of what the book is like.)
Book number two, Discreet Young Gentleman,
has just been released. It's an exciting time for me, just at the beginning of my writing career. I hope you'll stop by from time to time and see what's going on.
So--how did I come to write gay romance? I've been an avid reader all of my life, not only of romance but of almost any other genre you can think of: mystery, thriller, SF, fantasy, history, true crime, biography. However, I'm a strong believer in romance, and I always thought if I fulfilled my dream of becoming a writer, romance would be my primary venue.
But I got sidetracked. My love of history drew me into the study of archaeology, and well into my thirties I thought I'd spend my life excavating in the summer and teaching at a university throughout the school year. Trouble was, as time went on I wanted, more and more, to return to my first love: writing.
I dropped out of grad school and went to work for a bookstore. For one reason or another, it became a somewhat jokey prediction in the backroom that someday I would write a gay Regency romance. Later, when I sat down to work on a Roman epic I'd been fiddling with off and on, the idea of the gay Regency obsessed me.
That was the book I needed to write--something within a genre I loved, but fresh and different. I'm flexible enough myself to find the idea of two guys together romantic and sexy, and with the country going to hell on the same-sex marriage issue, I also itched to produce my own little protest by portraying gay couples in a positive light.
So I did. And (eventually) it sold. The rest is history...well, gay historical romance, anyway.
