BADFINGER was a rock/pop band formed in Swansea, Wales in the early 1960s, originally as THE IVEYS and is possibly the true initiator of the "Power-Pop" genre, which started following the British Merseybeat onslaught of the early/mid 60s, converging to Psych-Pop, and then emptying into the Blues-oriented revival at the tail-end of the decade. In 1970, Badfinger revived harmonious, melodic rock with a decisive new crunch with the 45 release of "No Matter What." It was universally accepted into the mainstream and became a worldwide smash. "Come And Get It" had been a precursor hit, but despite its quality, Paul McCartney's hand in writing the song had lessened their credibility. But the follow-up 45s "Day After Day" and "Baby Blue", in addition to the composition "Without You" as covered by Harry Nilsson, cemented the group as up-and-coming superstars.
Throughout the early 1970s the band was touted at times as the heir apparent to The Beatles, partly because of their close working relationships with the 'Fab Four' on various projects, but also because of their somewhat similar sound. However, it was the meteoric rise and harrowing demise of Badfinger that cemented their name in rock history journals. Although poised to make an impact on the music scene of the 1970s, starting it out with four hit singles and a number-one Billboard composition, Badfinger became victim to the worst elements of the music industry and internal strife; this resulted in bankruptcy and two suicides.
