In the beginning, there was Maestro Echoplex. The first songs I ever wrote, the first I ever recorded. There was only one album, a 30+ minute EP recorded and self-released (Android Eats Records) in 2001. The songs that I wrote were credited to "Johnny Fontaine," a nonexistent character. Yes, 2 layers of pseudonym to hide behind, and the beginning of a continuing infatuation with names. (See: John Guilt, Fulton Lights, etc...)
Somehow this little EP that could was heard across the Atlantic by some people who liked it lots, and this led to some travelling and the evolution of Maestro Echoplex into John Guilt. The EP picked up nice press clips from here and there, including an honor as the runner-up record of the year by the BBC New Music team.
Five years later, these songs strike me as pretty innocent, completely lacking in expectation and just sort of hinting at possibilities. It feels like ages ago, and I think my songwriting has come a long way (I hope). But people seem to still enjoy the songs, and I know I've been pretty bad at making the album available. Better late than never.
If you're interested in buying a copy, I have plenty left and would be happy to part with them for $8. Send me a message or email me at maestroechoplexmusic@yahoo.com and I'll give you the details. If you want to buy more than one, I'll draw you a picture or tell you a joke or something like that.
Update (7/10/06)--Catbird Records has a limited edition re-release of the EP with beautiful letterpress packaging. First 100 get a bonus 4-song mini-cd of unreleased Maestro material. Go snag a copy!
Thanks for your support. John Guilt came next, and I'm currently working on a new project under the name Fulton Lights. Check those out if you haven't already.
Peace.
