Lyapis Trubetskoy put their new album on direct digital download for free!
From September 25, the brand new album Manifest is available for download here.
Lyapis Trubetskoy became the first top indie band in the Post-Soviet musical scene, which released their album in such form, absolutely for free.
However, this act of musicians will hardly surprise all those persons, who watched the cultural and ideological evolution of the band during last five years.
"The main goal of the modern and creative person is to rethink and remake the slogan DIY (do it yourself) according to the present realities, - the leader of the band Sergey Mikhalok considers. - And it concerns not only anarho-pank cultures, but also independent art in general... Corporations, media holdings, records-labels and other monsters of show business is a pernicious filter for any fresh ideas! The best way to fight against this "nearmusical" system - is to spread music through the Internet! Then it will get to the listener quickly and for free. If the listeners will like it - they will go to our concert, and if they won't - "let's begin this game again".
The album Manifest will also include a ska-punk cover-version of the Ramones classic song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend". Lyapis Trubetskoy recorded the first version of this cover in 2004, for Russian tribute to the Ramones "Ramones Kidz". This version was so successful, that the band desided to re-record it in the same style for their new studio album Manifest.
Lyapis Trubetskoy (Belarus) is one of the strangest bands of the post-soviet show business. In 1998-1999 their songs could be heard on any major radio station, their videos were shown on every top TV channel both in Russia and CIS countries. Until now their legendary hits like Au, Ty kinula (You Gave Me Up), Zelenolazoye taksi (Green-eyed Taxi), V plat’ye belom (In A White Dress) and Yabloni (Apple-trees) are still popular among all Russian karaoke singers. Isn’t it the obvious sign of public acknowledgement? So, for Lyapis Trubetskoy the way towards stadium concerts seemed to be open, but…
“We came from the underground and became popular with our pop-culture parodies. One day to my horror I realized that our group has become similar to the objects of our parodies and mockery. We were starting to merge with all those pop-star crowd, but I’m not one of them and never wanted to be,” - Sergey Mikhalok, the band’s leader says. He admits that it wasn’t so easy to give up the show business game and become independent once again.
According to him, “it was very difficult to get our true essence back on top. And the thing wasn’t about any contracts. We had to overcome public opinion and, most importantly, set our own minds free. At first, my internal discomfort from the gap between the authentic Lyapis Trubetskoy and its public image was relieved by hard drinking and other stuff, but when my weight peaked at 110 kilograms and my mind was about to collapse, I gave up everything, lost 25 kilograms and started to play the music I like.”
Capital (2007) was the second independent album by Lyapis Trubetskoy after the Zoloty’ye yaytsy (Golden Balls) created in 2004 under heavy reggae and ska influence. “While working on Zoloty’ye yaytsy we didn’t understand what to do with our independence. As a result there were some reflex attempts to score a radio hit with Rain’ka or Pochtal’iony (Postmen) - Sergey Mikhalok says. - When I started my career I used to write songs that changed me and the world around me, but later I began to create stuff, that didn’t have influence either on me or the world around. At best those songs could be a soundtrack for some wedding or birthday. And what is horrible at some point I even used to be proud of that. But now I have come back to what everything started from – to a mix of biting satire and powerful chords.”
So Capital became one of the brightest albums of Russian alternative music in year 2007. Now it means to the band and its fans no less than Ty kinula (You Gave Me Up) in 1998 and already gave a rise to the new popularity wave for Lyapis Trubetskoy.
Video clips have played an important role in the album presentation. Two cheerful trash-videos for the songs Hare (Enough) and Kerch-2 were filmed by a famous actor and new wave director Vladimir Epifantsev. The third clip, animation video Capital, which has become a real Internet sensation, was made by Aliaksei Tserakhau, co-author of the legendary Au (1998) and Rozochka (1999) videos. Capital has hardly appeared on Russian and Belarusian TV, but has won several prizes and got a lot of nominations on the different video & music festivals in Russia, Belarus, Portugal, UK and so on.
Now Lyapis Trubetskoy is probably one of the most important national symbols of Belarus. Having passed a way from the Minsk nearby-theatrical underground up to large pop festivals, the band unexpectedly returned to the alternative roots. But instead of declared drunkenness has come ideological straight-edge, while instead of absurd pop-culture parodies - scathing political satire.
The new album Manifest, which release is planned for October 2008, for certain will present a lot of new surprises. World premiere of the program Manifest took place on September, 14th in Vitebsk (Belarus), and on October, 24th the new album will be presented in the biggest Moscow music club B1 Maximum.
