In the expanse of years, there was little left to say that was new. She grew weary of complaining about her thoughts, filled with the bygone eras of railroads and steam. And as she rode on along past San Simeon, in the pale afternoon sun, the silence drew ever sharper lines. Her estrangement began when she was introduced to new friends in San Francisco. Until that time she had been as always, fashionably pessimistic, filled with the new eras disdain for all that was past. But then enters Last American Buffalo, a tightly knit band of traveling gypsies known for charming a three eyed snake, armed only with wits and a three inch piece of garden hose. She fought them long and hard, matching wits night after night over bottles of wine and gentlemanly games of darts. Just when she believed she had prevailed they began reciting a slew of stories and tales of sleepless nights spent wrestling a pack of stray ferule badgers on the open plains of the Kalahari. The amount of truth being debatable. (Hadn't Livingston proved that impossible already?) But they seemed to hold powerful sway over the mind of the girl. No matter, though, she was able to keep step with any men. She cooked, attended rallies, hosted womens suffrage book club meetings, cleaned, spoke of the facts of life, all to keep her strength well sharpened. And for a while all seemed to be a going her way. They talked of their desire to attend meetings with her and her types of friends, to protest the prevailing gender stereotypes, all things that she approved of. But then one day with renewed vigor they refocused their efforts. All of them came, wave upon wave preaching their subversive gospel. Yet still she held firm, standing against these men out to steal her thoughts. But then on one bright morning she defeatedly realized that she had met her match and could say nothing. In that moment she knew all was lost. So she stole them away in a last ditch effort, away from the world to a place where no one could follow. But on this pale ordinary summer day, she hated them for what they had done, for changing her soul into something she would never understand. circa 1891.
