I'm Kurt Reifler, and I have been homeless for a year! It's not so bad really. I mean, it's by choice at least. I have been on my "48 in 08" tour, which has been amazing, and amazingly exhausting. In the process though, I have been blessed to have been played on XM radio lately, and a bunch of college stations too. In the last year I have also been receiving some flattering reviews from All Music, Time Out, Entertainment World, Static Multimedia, Flavorpill, etc. BILLBOARD even described my album as a "promising debut." Snazzy. I am grateful for my accolades, but nowhere near as grateful as I am to my friends and fans that have been supporting me, coming to shows, buying albums, putting me up, and giving me fruit on the way out the door in the morning to the next state...which leads me to my new outlook:
I was always of the philosophy that musicians/artists should be somewhat untouchable. Meaning - I didn't like the idea of "blogging" and putting up youtube videos of me eating dinner, etc. I felt like it some way it cheapened the art, and gave people more information than they needed. I felt like it allowed them to base their decision about the music on other factors than...well, the music. What I have realized though, after playing every goddamn state (minus Alaska and Hawaii), is that I AM the music I'm playing. And, giving people more information about me is just giving them more music, in a sense. I am aware this may sound like a load of shit, and don't get me wrong, it is. But, someone's personality and essence is definitely what their art is made of. So, why not give the source as well as the result?
So, I will now be taking a different approach to the way I promote my music, and myself in general. This is ME. The bios aren't going to have that 3rd person vibe anymore, as if someone else really important wrote it. I will control my urge to suppress the silly youtube videos people want to put up of me doing ludicrous things. The tour dates won't be secret until the last second. And most importantly, I won't be secret. They will be available to you, for anyone interested. This is my operation, my myspace page, my music, and my mind (scary place). And I invite you to it, for the first time I ever really have. It's all an open book now. I will be so much more available. And in this vain, there will be many interactive contests, blogs, street team opportunities, and other such grass roots shananigans in the very near future. So, come on by, say hello. I will respond, even if it takes me a minute. I appreciate you being here...
