   Jim Mahoney - Painter's Blurbs
About me:
Born in Hackensak, New Jersey on a summer day in 1966 My childhood years were spent playing in and around the industrial landscape of Northern New Jersey. These early memories most certainly had a significant impact on me and my art. I can recall walking along the railroad tracks fascinated by the structures all around me. Looking closely at the rusted metal, geometric shapes and corroded plumbing of the industrial machine. I saw art all around me. The color of rust and peeling paint continues to interest me. My father would take me into NYC on Sundays to visit lower Manhattan's Canal St. District. Again, I found myself surrounded by elements of the industrial society in which i lived. Sidewalk displays of machine parts and old junk for sale. Elements which play a role in my art. My grandfather Joe Miller was a machinist by day, and also an oil painter by night. He would often stay up all night painting then go to work. My uncle Frank Miller worked as an illustrator for Lockheed Martin and is said to have also experimented with painting. He currently lives in the Baltimore area. One of my earliest and most significant artist influences was the work of H.R Giger . My grandfather had given me a book of Giger's work when I was 12. The industrial and sexual nature of his work disturbed me. It changed me viewpoint on art. I realized then that the primary objective of art should be to convey an emotion and that I could decide what emotion that was. I moved from New York to Atlanta in 1992. I often return to New York City at least once a year. I stay at my beloved Hotel Chelsea I'm also a musician. I enjoy playing guitar, piano and singing. I can usually be found each week playing one of the Open Mics around Atlanta

People often say that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder,' and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves.

Thanks Jim! Funny, I've never played that song live...and I totally forgot to play it AGAIN at my show last night. Bizarre coincidence I suppose.

Anyway, I think I may have had a brilliant idea and wanted to get your opinion...wouldn't it be cool to collect the first song that all of us wrote after Mahoney Fest and put them all together on a cd? Grace is all about it... Let me know what you think! I think it would be a mighty interesting project.

Hi Jim, hope all is well with you. Just wanted to say thanks again for giving me a kick start to listening to music again. I saw Grace at Sweetwater Brewary last Thursday and Lindsay Appel last night at Smith's old bar. I missed Stefan the week before. Check out The Lucas Cates Band below when you have time. They played after Lindsay last night. http://profile. myspace. com/index. cfm?fuseaction=user. viewprofile&friendid=47324625&MyToken=52c53c00-fad9-489a-a19b-0298a435599f

Had a really lovely time at Mahoneyfest. Was great to see everyone and to hear so much good music in such a cosy gathering. It all went so quickly! Clare and I both had a great time. Hope we didn't come across too jet lagged! Thanks so much for looking after us while we were in Atlanta too. It was just really nice to be able to chill out after the road trip! Hey it'd be great if you guys are able to come over and visit England / Ireland. You'd be welcome any time, whether it be over summer or later. I think you'll like it here!
See you soon,
Tom

PS.
Loving this Jimmy Gnecko track on your page!
