"Jared Paul is the watchdog of poetry, a force not unlike a hurricane –a very skinny, loud, sweaty hurricane that wants you to know your life is worth everything and that this planet belongs to us all."
-Mike McGee: 2003 Individual National Poetry Slam Champ and 2006 Individual World Poetry Slam Champ

"The only thing stronger than JARED PAUL's convictions is his ability to change yours with the craft of his language."
-Sonya Renee: 2004 Individual National Poetry Slam Champion

"Jared Paul is a juggernaut who lives his politics. His work speaks to the political - which is his personal - that he lives with sincere conviction and integrity."
-Michael Cirelli, Executive Director URBAN WORD NYC

"If the United Nations needed a representative from the Slam/poetry community, we'd send them Jared."
-Buddy Wakefield; 2004 & 2005 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion, 2005 European Slam Champion

"There are three men who's work i want to memorize and one day read to my children. Jared Paul is one of them."
-Andrea Gibson, Multi-time National & Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist

"Emerson said that character is higher than intellect. what happens when someone has both character, intellect and a sense of conviction that can be described only as humbling? You have made Jared Paul's acquaintance."
-Columbia Recording Artist, Raine Maida, of Our Lady Peace

"A rare artist that not only lives the things that he talks about, but more importantly, inspires others to do so as well. You can find his work scribbled in sharpie on the back of picket signs from The UK to Albuquerque, NM." -Ken Arkind: 2006 National Poetry Slam Championship Team from Denver, Colorado

Jared Paul is a social worker, journalist, and organizer from Providence, Rhode Island. Known for thoroughly researched work, poignant presentation, and dedication to craft, Jared is widely recognized as one of the top spoken word artists in the country. His performance accomplishments include two nation wide tours with world-renowned poet and Epitaph Recording artist Sage Francis, and advancing to the Individual World Poetry Slam Final's in both 2006 and 2007.

A reputation for explosive delivery and intense politics have made Jared a stand out, but it's constant involvement in direct action off stage that hasmade him nearly legendary in the world of Spoken Word. Over the past 8 years he has helped organize and participated in countless social forums, street theater actions, block letter writing/phone banking endeavors, indy-media fundraisers, protests, awareness canvassing, and extensive working class lobbies throughout the United States & England. Jared covered both the 2004 Democratic and Republican National Conventions for 90.3FM WRIU News, and is currently involved in a class action lawsuit against the City of New York; 500 U.S. citizens, all detained for 30-72 hours without charge or access to legal representation during the 2004 RNC.

We have a relationship with everything we touch; our goods, who makes them, how those people are treated, how the goods are transported, and how the whole process affects their respective ecosystems. With this in mind, Jared avoids purchasing any goods that are not Fair Trade certified; no coffee, tea, chocolate, sugar, bananas. etc. Jared has been vegan for 11 years and does not drink alcohol or smoke any drugs.

Factory Farming destroys the environment, perpetrates severe and unnatural suffering against living creatures, and decimates working class farmers; no if, ands, or buts about it. JARED TRIES NOT TO PURCHASE ANYTHING (FIRST HAND) THAT WAS MADE IN A SHOP FURTHER THAN 200 MILES FROM RHODE ISLAND OR MANUFACTURED FROM MATERIALS THAT ORGINATED FROM A PLACE FURTHER THAN 200 MILES FROM RHODE ISLAND; REGIONAL PURCHASING IS ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO COMBAT POLLUTION AND HINDER EXCESS CARBON MONOXIDE PRODUCTION.

I have good news for you, Jared!

The last time we saw each other, I didn't dance at all- and now I do! I might not be a good dancer, but I find it to be very fun. Haha.

The reason I'm telling you this is because I remember you talking about dancing, and because 'good dancing' is listed as something that influences you.

you're playing on the same stage as 27, that would be great if i wasn't in a different continent. ah well, c'est la vie. i just wanted to make sure you knew about this, and I'm 99.9% certain you knew about it way before i did but there is no harm in confirming these things i feel.

Fall is just around the bend. Hit me up as soon as you know what date you need and stuff. And as always, you definitely have a place to crash (this time, there's an entire bedroom, since my roommate moved out).

Naked City is still as stagnant and culturally devoid as you left it. Which means it needs your graces again as soon as possible.

You need to return to my neck of the woods as soon as you book your next tour.

And Burgundy will be attending St. Lawrence University for environmental studies and sociology, which means you'll also have to make a stop there, too.

Keep fighting the good fight.

PROVIDENCE SLAM

Jul 14 2008 3:46 AM

Hey, all -

The PROVIDENCE SLAM singer/songwriter open mic is back again this week at AS220! As always, all kinds of performers - poets, beatboxers, fiddlers, fire-breathing juggler-ventriloquists, etc. - are welcome!

And we have a special feature for this month's show:

SHANE HALL is the frontman for The Rectangle Club (www. rectangleclub. com), based out of Massachusetts. Their sound combines punk, blues, and folk into a style that's both challenging and listenable - or as Shane refers to it, "the kind of rock and roll that seeks to get your brain working just as hard as your body."

Download "Enemy" for free from their site, and you'll hear what he means.

In addition to playing with The Rectangle Club, Shane also has a solid repertoire of acoustic material. He's the rare songwriter who can write lyrics both serious and humorous while delivering them over an original melody.

In short, you definitely don't want to miss his set.

For the open mic:

Each musician gets 8 MINUTES of STAGE TIME!!
Each poet gets 3 MINUTES!!
Most importantly: ORIGINAL WORKS ONLY!!

We hope to see ya THURSDAY!!
