Gillian's Interests
|
| General | Music, film, books, photography, travel (more thinking about than doing, alas). Writing. Art. Talking. Politics. Talking about politics. Talking about art, music, film...you get the idea. | | Music | Wow, where do I start? Grew up listening to the Beatles, loved '70s-era Queen, Carole King, Abba, punk, then Kate Bush, Danielle Dax (still an obsession), then the female artists came crashing in around me, Marianne Faithfull (mainly Broken English and beyond), Laurie Anderson, anyone remember the Au Pairs? Then came "grunge" and Nirvana, riot grrrl, Sleater-Kinney. Then came Elvis, Peggy Lee, Patsy Cline, Howlin' Wolf, Skip James, '50s rock and roll, '60s girl group stuff. In 2004 discovered The Monks, amazing '60s garage rock, wild crazy amazing. Plus musicals, practically no one else shares that interest (My Fair Lady has the Perfect Music Score). | | Movies | I have been watching films pretty much all my life, so it is hard to narrow it down. Here's a bunch of random titles. Some Like It Hot. West Side Story. Mulholland Drive. All About Eve. The Women. Dr. No. The Sting. Y Tu Mama Tambien. Network. The Ladykillers (UK film, not the reissue). Sunset Boulevard. Dr. Strangelove. Suddenly Last Summer.
Recently seen and liked: The Apple, Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson, The Wrecking Crew. | | Television | Nothing I like enough now to watch. I check out the news to see what horrible new things are happening in the world. I'm obsessed w/various Brit mini series: I, Claudius, Prime Suspect, House of Cards, The Singing Detective. Angels In America. The Avengers (Diana Rigg era), Batman, Xena: Warrior Princess. Twin Peaks, older Simpsons, much older SNL. Dynasty. Married With Children was a guilty pleasure. First season of Desperate Housewives. | | Books | I started reading at a very young age and now I feel like I inhale books sometimes. Let's see. In college starting reading Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker, Sam Shepard. Then Edna O'Brien, Fay Weldon, Joe Orton. I read The Orton Diaries every year. Marilyn French. Peter Guralnick. Randy Shilts' books are amazing (Mayor of Castro Street, The Band Played On, Conduct Unbecoming). Gore Vidal, I worship at his altar. 1984. Wuthering Heights. Dracula. The Handmaid's Tale; stop reading this and go get it right now! Have fallen in love with Notes On A Scandal, much much better than the film. Great American Novels: The Grapes of Wrath and Valley of the Dolls. I like biographies, some faves are Diana Arbus, Mapplethorpe, and Lovely Me (about Jackie Susann). Recently read: Our Daily Meds, The Last Campaign. | | Heroes | Dr. Helen Calidicott, anti-nuke activist, one of the few people who actually gives me hope (though even she's feeling discouraged lately). Gore Vidal because everything he says is wonderful. |

Gillian's Blurbs |
About me:
Right now, I write for a living and sometimes I actually make money. I write about "popular culture," a nice catch-all phrase, don'tcha think?
Here's some history:
(book)
She's A Rebel: The History of Women in Rock and Roll (Seal Press, 1992, 2nd edition Seal Press/Avalon, 2002); Green Day: Rebels With A Cause (Omnibus); Nirvana: In Utero (Continuum).
(selected anthologies)
Goldmine: Beatles Digest (two editions); The Nirvana Companion; Trouble Girls: The Rolling Stone Book on Women in Rock; The Best of the Beatles Book. Plus a couple of editions of the Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives, and CD ROMs for Microsoft/Music Central and Encyclopedia Britannica.
(liner notes)
Nirvana, With the Lights Out (plus I was a historian/consultant for the project); Laurie Anderson, Talk Normal; Heart, Judy Collins, Pat Benatar, Paula Cole "Best Of" compilations.
I've also written for many magazines over the years, especially Goldmine, CDnow.com, The Rocket. I've been very pleased to write for Mojo, Q, Record Collector, The Beatles Book, Rolling Stone, Harp, No Depression, Blurt, Option, and the Experience Music Project, to mention a few. And I was thrilled to help Krist Novoselic with his book, Of Grunge and Government: Let's Fix This Broken Democracy.
Oh, and it's a publicist at Sony Legacy who says I'm a "Titan among journalists." And in Best of The Beatles Book I was called a "Beatle Expert." So it's official!
