This breezy compendium, by far the most inclusive gathering of its sort, profiles dozens of ancient, modern, and legendary girls and women-–from the historical likes of Joan of Arc, Vietnam’s Trung Sisters, Golda Meir, and Mia Hamm to such unusual entries as the Powerpuff Girls and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Apeles draws examples from every inhabited continent except Australia and caps her rousing gallery with a multimedia resource list. Weaker sex? I don’t think so.
From Bloomsbury Review:
Real girls who kicked some stuff around! Women Warriors compiles the stories of historical, mythic and apocryphal women who took matters into their own capable hands. Along with Joan of Arc, Lakshmibai of India, and the Trung Sisters of ancient Vietnam we meet other types of warriors like Rosa Parks, Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma, plus athletes, politicians and more from around the world. Inclusive, upbeat without being bloodthirsty, Women Warriors offers women of all ages proof that they can make a difference. —X. Berry

About me: History books and the media have impressed upon us that men have been at the forefront of major battles throughout time. With the exception of Joan of Arc or the fictitiously portrayed Amazons, people are unaware of the amazing real women warrior stories that have existed for ages.
Whether young peasant or royal mother, bus rider or nun, women have continued to take to various “battlefields” to fight for what they believe in. WOMEN WARRIORS: Adventures from History's Greatest Female Fighters (Seal Press) by Teena Apeles celebrates all these women in a colorful, upbeat and informative fashion unlike any history book has done before.
It features more than 70 fierce femmes representing more than 25 countries, including The Amazons, France’s Joan of Arc, Vietnam’s Trung Sisters, Apache warrior Lozen, Boudicca of the Iceni, Japan’s Tomoe Gozen, Buffy and the Powerpuff Girls of the big and small screen, India’s Lakshmibai, Mogolia’s Khutulun, China’s Mulan, Burma’s Aung San Suu Kyi, Africa’s Queen Jinga, TV heroine Xena, comic book superhero Storm and America’s Mia Hamm and Rosa Parks, among others.
WOMEN WARRIORS was the best-selling children’s/young adult book at Los Angeles’ favorite independent bookstore, Skylight Books, in 2004. It received positive reviews from Bitch, Bloomsbury Review, KLIATT, Feminist Magazine (KPFK-FM), Morning Talk Radiozine (KBOO-FM), The Kansas City Star and Young People’s Press, among others.
Who I'd like to meet: More women warriors who have inspiring tales to share... <> teen readers, YA librarians, teachers, indie bookstores and anyone who has happened to read Women Warriors.

Thank you for your friendship and your interest in our first film Shroud.
As lifelong students of history, we have a particular fascination with the middle ages – honestly, what kid didn’t grow up fantasizing about knights and armor?
Though set in the Old West, the story of Shroud is serviced by several rich medieval revelations, not the least of which is the Teutonic Knights, and their fall at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410 AD. The script beautifully and logically incorporates plate mail and a broadsword in support of an elegant plot that will keep you guessing until the very end.
The priority of the Teutonic Knights is eventually revealed as the lynchpin of this particular western story. With the historical reality of female knights, we were able to enshrine our beautiful lead actress in fitted mail without a gross violation of historical precedent.
More pictures, videos, screen savers and other goodies are coming soon. We know your time is important to you… so thank you for letting us have a little part of your day.
Thanks for adding me as a friend! I just finished reading your book to find new heroines to portray in my photo series WOMEN WARRIORS. I really enjoyed it! I look forward to seeing more of your work.
