EAT goes to Burning Man!
Starhawk and Students Create Permaculture Installation at Burning Man
Author and earth-activist Starhawk is assembling a posse of permaculture graduates to create an installation within the Sustainability Pavilion at this year’s Burning Man August 27 through September 3. This year’s Burning Man theme “Greening the Man” inspired Starhawk to visit this iconic event on the Nevada playa for the first time.
In affiliation with the program Earth Activist Training, twelve certified permaculturists have designed a unique pavilion to rest lightly on the Nevada playa and leave no trace behind after the thousands of Burning Man pilgrims have left the desert. Made from recycled plastic water pipe, the installation framework embodies the permaculture principle of “waste as an unused resource”. and will provide a walk-through overview of permaculture principles and sustainable solutions in photographs through interactive games and altars.
Those entering the labyrinth will walk down a “hallway of despair” that opens upon a mandala honoring the four elements of earth, water, air and fire. Beyond that, a hallway details many of the solutions and visionary possibilities for change: nature’s patterns—patterns that permaculturists observe before creating earth friendly solutions to 21st century dilemmas, and visual representations of the permaculture principles. Deep within the installation, a play pen offers visitors interactive opportunities to understand the healing powers of permaculture.
“Creative people are abundant at Burning Man,” Starhawk said. “This is fertile ground for planting seeds of a system of ecological design.”
According to Starhawk, the project is “inspiring because it demonstrates a spectrum of possible solutions to our energy problems. It inspires people to take action in many different ways in their lives.”
