Doc's Interests
|
| General | DJing, music-- house, hip hop, funk, soul, trance, jungle, breaks, classic rock and blues. Movies, literature, journalism, blogging, cooking on a budget, dancing, clubbing, reading, trouble and creating awkwardness where none existed. Someday I want to be a classic Southern writer, a renowned novelist that will eventually be included in some giant collegiate anthology of great writers of the 21st century thats used primarily to roll joints in college dorm rooms. A guy can dream, can't he? I write mostly prose/short stories for the time being, you can read my published works at www.thuglit.com and on humdingerzine.com. | | Music | Fingathing, Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, Q*Bert, Krush, Shadow, Humpty Vission, Bad Boy Bill, Icey, Pete Tong, Paul Oakenfold, Chicken George, Panzah Zandahz, Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk, The Avalanches, Alex Gopher, Mixmaster Mike, Felix Da Housecat, Thievery Corporation, Dangermouse, Food, LTJ Bukem, The Crystal Method, The Prodigy, Mark Farina, A3, Hyper, James Zabiela, MC Chris, MF Doom, People Under the Stairs, EPMD, Gang Starr, Blackalicious, Beastie Boys, Biggie, Snoop, Dre, the Coup, De La Soul, Texas Legacy, MIKE JONES!
| | Movies | Training Day, Human Traffic, Hustle & Flow, Groove, American Beauty, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Where the Buffalo Roam, The Big Lebowski, The Royal Tenenbaums, Banlieu 13, Unleashed, Serenity. I love old kung fu flicks and am addicted to crappy action movies.
| | Television | I'm quite addicted to TV on DVD, actually. The Curse of Netflix. I'm hooked on The Sopranos (Season 4), LOST, Family Guy, South Park, Boondocks, Robot Chicken, Firefly and Doctor Who. I also love old episodes of That 70s Show, the Simpsons, and Star Trek (anything pre-Voyager) | | Books | I love 'em all, but current highlights include:
The Great Shark Hunt by HST, "Among the Thugs" by Bill Buford, and "I Always Look Up the Word Egregious" by Maxwell Nurnberg (thanx Grandpa!) I love clever wordplay and books about words, and have a fierce fondness for old crime noir and anything experimental or post-modern.
| You Should Be a Science Fiction Writer |
Your ideas are very strange, and people often wonder what planet you're from.
And while you may have some problems being "normal," you'll have no problems writing sci-fi.
Whether it's epic films, important novels, or vivid comics...
Your own little universe could leave an important mark on the world!

The Clown Prince of Crime. You are a brilliant mastermind but are criminally insane. You love to joke around while accomplishing the task at hand.

About me:
unheard prophet/ronin DJ/amateur badass
Ever since I was a young boy, people have loved the sound of my voice. I figure in this life ya can either get busy talkin', or ya can get busy dyin'.
I've done a lot of things, crammed a great deal of experience into my twenty-five years. Some were good, some were bad. Had just about every crappy job you can get--I've worked in video rental, tech support, door-to-door sales, insurance, pizza delivery (for about three hours), and even promoted tobacco products at the Texas Motor Speedway. I've been a valet, a DJ, a bartender and a bouncer. Buy me a drink and I'll tell you a story. That's the one thing I've always been--a storyteller.
Now I work in a bookstore. It's nice. The money isn't great and the work is tedious, but no one's trying to stab me and I get to talk about books all day. And it affords me time and opportunity to do what I really love: write.
My short stories have appeared in a few local rags and defunct lit mags, also on the pages of Thuglit.com and Humdingerzine.com. My story "A Bar Called Sue's" will also be appearing in the first Thuglit print anthology, on shelves next summer. I'm nearing completion of my first novel, entitled "Sweet Benny and the Sanchez Penitentiary Band." A rock band made up of ex-cons sets out on a quest to play at Austin City Limits, with a young wannabe journalist in tow. Along the way trouble, and hilarity, ensue. I hope to finish it this year. After that, I want to go back to grad school and get my MFA in creative writing, so I can teach somewhere while I write my books. And if I won a Pulitzer somewhere along the way, that'd be cool too.
I used to DJ under the name Liquid Prophet in New York, and gained some notoriety as a house party player in Austin under the name Doc Awesome; if you're lucky enough to have attended a Fort Awesome party, then you know what I'm talking about. I don't produce or remix my own tracks, but if you need someone to keep your party hype, drop Doc a line-- phat beats at an affordable price.
If I'm not writing, spinning or dancing, I'm probably drinking. Try to keep up. As my professor once told me, "An author is just a device for turning liquor into literature."
I edited my profile with Thomas Myspace Editor V3.6!
