Joel Kemps (lead vocals and guitar), is a veteran musician who has been playing in bands and worship teams for over forty years. His music is inspired by his past life experiences. Kemps wants to keep “Indigenous American Music (Blues and early Rock), at the center of his style.” “This style of music is disappearing and I want to keep it alive in the hearts of my fellow Americans.” “Music is an art form and I want people to enjoy this art form.”
Mike Brenner (bass guitar) became re-involved in music 5 years ago after a 20 year hiatus to raise a family. A native of Cleveland, Mike spent his formative years studying classical guitar, piano and music theory. As Cleveland became a “proving ground” for many professional musicians, Mike developed a wide acceptance of various types of music and styles. On a recent work assignment to San Francisco, Mike spent a majority of his free time along Fisherman’s Warf listening to the street musicians and typically ended up at Lou’s, where he was to become “hooked” on the Blues. When the opportunity presented itself, Mike joined Joel Kemps and Mike Cline to form “Big Nation”.
Mike Cline (drums and percussion) is a Merced, California native who has played drums locally in marching, concert and jazz bands from the age of 8 all the way through college. He has played drums and percussion professionally now for over 35 years. Mike has a versatile playing style that incorporates many different genre’s. His attitude towards the Blues is influenced by his Rock background, which fuses into a unique style that drives the band.

Big Nation is an American Band that is dedicated to keeping indigenous American Music alive. According to guitarist Joel Kemps, “American Blues and early Rock & Roll are at the center of our music. We want to keep this musical genre alive in the hearts of our fellow Americans. Music is an art form and we want people to continue to enjoy this art form”.
Big Nation has taken the over 40 years of experience of Joel Kemps and fused it with the versatility of veteran drummer Mike Cline and modern rock bassist Mike Brenner. This has produced a sound that incorporates the older school of blues and early rock, with a more modern style that comes from a tight rhythm section.
Big Nation can play either softer jazz versions of classics or crank out the harder sounds of West Texas style Blues and Rock. We are careful about the lyrics that we incorporate into our music because we want entire families to have fun enjoying our sound.
Because of their versatility, Big Nation is able to perform in different venues ranging from motor cycle club rallies, festivals, community events, fundraisers and everything in between.
