Benn DeMole - Composer
I was born with a fascination for the sonic world. After a childhood playing wind instruments (recorder, flute, & didgeridoo) and listening to the radio and the music collections of my parents and older brother I started working as an Audio Engineer and a Composer with computers. I have an interest in the mix of acoustic/traditional instruments with sounds generated by technology. Also in sampling sounds from the real world and manipulating them with machines.
In 1997 & 1998 I composed my first two discs: Eyed Side & NonSilence And Beats Under Heat. The former, Eyed Side, has dark poetry and sounds, rhythms & textures from a strange future past. The later,NonSilence And Beats Under Heat, was the first in a series focusing in on music ambient, electro-acoustic, downbeat, and experimental music, without words, and has recently been reviewed in Cyclic Defrost"...Evocative ambience that soothes despite its comparatively dark textural palette...".
In 2002 I went on a journey to South America. After some months travelling through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia & Argentina I settled in Buenos Aires for 4 months. It was there that I composed most of Ciudades del Alma (Cities of the Soul) which has influences from HipHop, Tango, Electro, and the culture of the Incas. Ciudades del Alma was finished in 2005 when I returned again to Buenos Aires and lived there for most of the year, during which time I also studied composition and worked with local musicians.
Other pieces composed between 2000 & 2005 were selected to form Volumes 2 & 4 of NonSilence and Beats Under Heat and were composed in a variety of locations including Paris, Venice, Buenos Aires, Sydney and Eden.
Currently I'm living in Sydney composing new works, both alone and with the ambient hiphop duo Assemblage Point. I am also setting up an independent record label Um Records and am involved in a physical theatre troop Strings Attached. Last year I completed my sixth? album The Music for The Foreign Installation which is the soundtrack to the first production of Strings Attached and can be purchased online at Um Records.
Recent compositions include the soundtrack for a dance performance by the Pork Collective at The Great Escape Festival and special song for the anti-nuclear power/uranium mining compilation call Turning the Tide that was composed entirely using the voices of Aboriginal Elders talking on the about the issues.
I've finished work on "The Experiment" a new production by Strings Attached, we had two seasons, and I did the soundtrack both music and sound design as well as performing in it.
The Tango Saloon play the 'Gypsy Tango Party' next Thursday 2nd October at The Factory, with The Barons Of Tang (Melbourne) and On The Stoop. Also, email thetangosaloon@hotmail.com to receive details of our Secret Halloween Gig on October 31.
