They may not be inducted for 10 or 20 years, but these musicians define a generation.

Being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is one of the greatest honors a musician can hope for in their careers, and every year a handful of lucky bands and singers are chosen to join the ranks of some of the best in history. This time around, acts including Cheap Trick, Chicago and NWA were honored just a few weeks ago in New York City, and the show is set to air on HBO tomorrow night (April 30).

2015’s ceremony might have just taken place, but people are already talking about next year. It’s easy to point to legends and guess when they’ll have their turn, but what about the next generation? Who will be inducted 10 or 20 years from now? Those are more difficult predictions, but here are a few bets on who will one day have a spot in the Hall of Fame.

Foo Fighters

This group goes first because it is the most obvious choice of any band out there today. Frontman Dave Grohl is already a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thanks to his participation in a little-known outfit called Nirvana back in the day, but that doesn’t mean Foo Fighters won’t also one day sit amongst some of the best that ever played.

There are many musicians that have been inducted more than once, thanks to their ongoing genius in several groups (Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton are two good examples). There is zero chance this doesn’t happen, and it’s likely going to take place in one of the group’s first years of eligibility.

Coldplay

They might not be at the top of their game at the moment (though, they did just headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show, so they can’t be doing too poorly), but the British foursome surely has a spot waiting for them in the Hall. Before the masses began making fun of them and their position as one of the biggest bands on the planet slipped away slightly, Coldplay was a huge deal, and the critics loved them.

The group’s first few albums were successful commercially and well received critically, and they have continued to make good, if not the greatest, music since.

Linkin Park

It might feel as if their time has passed a little bit, but Linkin Park has all the makings of a perfect Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. They made it big and managed to sell millions of copies time and time again; they won Grammys and completely changed the rock genre for good in a lasting, meaningful way. Rap, rock, electronic, and screamo all came together perfectly in so many of their songs, and they are still one of the most popular acts touring and releasing new music these days.

The band shows no sign of stopping, and believe it or not, they are coming up on 25 years since their first album...

Slipknot

Hard rock and metal are already underrepresented in the Hall, and those responsible for choosing who is up for the prize are aware of that, as fans of the genre make loud and clear year after year. Slipknot is one of the few bands in the hard rock/metal world that managed to develop a massive fan base and truly make it big, and that success puts them at the top of the pile when it comes to artists in the genre worthy of being inducted.

Now, because these styles of music don’t mesh terribly well with older dudes (who are typically the ones picking the annual winners), it might be a while before they are actually honored, but I believe they will be.

White Stripes/Jack White

Neither The White Stripes nor Jack White on his own are eligible yet, but both have a good shot at one day being inducted...now it’s just a matter of identifying which one will get there first. Both are good choices for different reasons, and while it is possible that both parties will enter the doors at some point, they will likely be separated by a good many years.

My guess is that Jack White will be chosen first, as he was the genius behind the White Stripes and then went on to create great music as a solo artist as well, while fellow member Meg essentially disappeared entirely.

Kanye West

I know what you’re going to say, “But he’s not rock, he’s hip-hop!” This is true, but the genre has already found its way into the Hall, and there is no reason why those that decide who gets in won’t continue to reward the best in that world. This year, legendary innovators in the space NWA were inducted, and there are sure to be more.

Kanye is one of the best choices to be honored, as he is truly somebody who is taking hip-hop into new and amazing places, all while maintaining his place in the mainstream. There are plenty of artists changing what it means to be “rap,” but they haven’t made an impact like Mr. West.

Blink 182

Pop punk was huge for a long time, and Blink 182 were partially responsible not so much for creating the genre, but for perfecting it and bringing it to the charts. The fun-loving band had a string of hits back in the day, and they are still beloved by fans all over the world.

Fellow pop-punkers Green Day were brought into the Hall of Fame last year in their first round of eligibility, and while the same might not happen for the now-troubled trio, they are great candidates. People loved them, their songs are still caught in your head and they pushed a new style of rock, which is always appreciated.

Adele

Again, not very rock and roll, but she’s someone who simply cannot be ignored. Her impact on the music industry, her incredible sales and that voice...it’s all phenomenal and worthy of induction. There isn’t a single thing to dislike about Adele, and while she already has plenty of awards and honors to her name (10 Grammys and an Oscar ain’t too shabby), there are plenty more in her future, including a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Her music is important and boundary-shifting, and there is precedent for accepting only the most revolutionary pop acts, as Madonna is sitting pretty in there already. Adele still has many years to go before she’s even eligible, but she’ll get there eventually, and she certainly deserves it.
